The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced a fine to its biggest superstar after NHL officials arguably failed to protect him in a game.
Alex Ovechkin was fined $5,000 for what DoPS is terming as “spearing.” To be clear, Ovechkin hit Bruins forward Trent Frederic as hard as he could in the scrotum with his hockey stick.
The Washington Capitals matched up with the team that many believe could be the best in the East Division and took them down in a spirited, shootout effort 2-1. This was some pretty fantastic hockey from the road warring Caps.
The Caps outshot the Bruins 28 to 19 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 41 to 36.

Czech best friends, Jakub Vrana and Vitek Vanecek, combined in the shootout to give the Capitals a victory over one of the NHL’s best teams on Thursday.
In a surprise, Peter Laviolette tabbed Vrana to be the Capitals’ first shooter in the shootout, replacing TJ Oshie. The decision worked.
The Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins played a fierce game on Wednesday night. It had a playoff feel, which is the polite way of saying that neither team could put a dang shot on net.
I swear the Caps scored in the first period, but it didn’t count, so we went forty minutes with a goalie duel. Then, eighty seconds into the third period, John Carlson got owned at the Boston blue line and David Pastrnak scored on a breakaway. Lars Eller fought back with a greasy rebound goal from traffic to tie it up with 14 minutes left in rego.
Boston goalie Tuukka Rask had to bust out a big save on Dmitry Orlov to survive overtime, but he did.

Boston Bruins enforcer Trent Frederic goaded Tom Wilson into a third period fight February. He would not get so luck with future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin.
After shoving Oveckhin dangerously into the boards with a push, the Russian machine got up and threw a punch. Frederic assumed this meant an invite to dance, but for Ovi, he would never salsa with such a player.

NBCSN’s Bob McKenzie is reporting that Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan and superstar Alex Ovechkin have had “multiple conversations” about a possible contract extension during the season.
After their most recent talk, the two sides agreed to table talks until April.

On Wednesday, Zdeno Chara played in Boston for the first time since leaving the Bruins after 14 seasons.
Though the stands were empty, the Bruins welcomed Big Zee back a moving, crowdsourced tribute video.
It’s happening. The Capitals are streaking. Fresh off their third win in a row, the Caps have traveled to Boston to face off against the Bruins. Big headline of the day is that this Zdeno Chara‘s first game in Boston since he left the Bruins after 14 seasons. But, Chara has made it very clear that his focus is not on his big return to Boston. It’s on getting another win with the Capitals and seeing his family.
