Misc. you missed: All the feels from the Caps-Canucks game

The Washington Capitals beat the Vancouver Good Boys 3-2 Tuesday night at Capital One Arena. And now that we’ve got the hockey out of the way, let’s talk about everything else that happened at the game!

Pregame

The crowd showed up in full force for Jay Beagle with signs and love. It was a real pleasure to share the story of the couple who brought Beagle signs to the Canucks game in Colorado, and it was even more special to see Caps fans respond by flooding the warmups with signs, including the one designed by RMNB. Ms. Bahniuk outdid herself with the signs.

We had to do a whole post about it. Here’s some highlights.

Nic Dowd wore this suit and it was the first time anyone has ever been in a picture with Braden Holtby and worn a suit better than him.

It was “Hockey is for Everyone” night, and the United Arab Emirates Women’s National Hockey Team and the American Special Hockey Association were present.

The Capitals did not use Pride Tape on their sticks before the game. They taped sticks after a practice a few days ago. Those sticks and signed pucks are available for auction now. They’ll also use Pride Tape again during warm-ups on the 11th during the Kings game.

During the “Game”

Jay Beagle cried and so did we. (More on that hug later.)

Jay Beagle also smooshed Michal Kempny so maybe Michal Kempny cried twice? It was a big smoosh from a big man.

Another thing to make you cry: the Mite on Ice who was interviewed during intermission said her favorite player was Brooks Orpik. When they asked her what she wanted to tell him, this is what she said.

Tom Wilson stood in front of Blaine Forsythe for an entire bench interview, it was hilarious, Ms. Bahniuk has that story here.

Hug #1: The “Ovi Breaks Another Record” goal!

Ovechkin got the secondary assist on TJ Oshie’s goal to become the highest scoring Russian-born player ever! Goalscorer and American Hero TJ Oshie went sliding into the goal net with about the same grace as most people slide into your DMs.

Ovi, who got the secondary assist, yelled in everyone’s faces about it.

He broke Sergei Fedorov’s record in 2019 but he broke Sergei Fedorov in 2009.

John Carlson got the puck for Ovi afterward.

Happy Cap!

Hug #2: The Connolly “Ho Hum” hug

Jakub Vrana determined that Brett Connolly’s goal was a good touchdown.

Brett Connolly, however, was quite blase about the whole affair.

Also, can we start a petition about not having the camera focus on the sad goalie after the goal? It’s. It’s real sad. 🙁

Connolly did stay in the hug long enough to receive his teammates’ affections. It’s not an inadequate hug. It is a perfectly exactly adequate hug.

Hug #3: The “Someone Scored?!” hug

At first this looked like Kuznetsov’s goal, and then it looked like it wasn’t a goal because of the high stick, but it was eventually determined to be Jakub Vrana’s goal from the behind the net.

The esteemed GIFer Hockeykot felt that Tom Wilson was trying to avoid being third wheel. (Which is usually what happens to anyone in a Backstrom/Ovechkin hug. It’s those two and then the third, fourth, and fifth wheels, with Braden as the spare sixth wheel.)

I am not entirely convinced of this point–in my view, Wilson usually anchors whatever hug he is a part of.

We may need to do a Wilson Hug Analysis to go along with Mr. Hassett’s analysis of the, y’know, “hockey.”

GOALIE HUG LINE!

Dmitry Orlov gives his goalie a gentle bonk on the head for saving 30 of 32 shots and also, some speculation here, for being a lovely human.

Hug #83: The “Beags Breaks Everyone’s Hearts” hug

It’s a good hug, Beags.

We’re all crying.

Tom Wilson is not crying, he is giving Jay Beagle a lil cup check. (But, as @rwcaps pointed out, “A good friend makes you smile when you’re about to cry (at an inconvenient time like when you’re at work and on camera).”

Postgame

Jay Beagle made us cry even more.

Love ya, Beags. All the best.
