Jay Beagle had this day circled on his calendar. February 5 marked his first return to Washington, DC since signing as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks over the summer.
To honor his return, the Capitals aired a tribute video on the jumbotron.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

Beagle’s video includes highlights of his time with the Bears and Capitals and personal moments with his family and former teammates. There were snippets of Beags raising the Calder Cup and Stanley Cup, along with footage of receiving his championship ring. Braden Holtby in the video calls Beags “the perfect teammate.” The Capitals also interspersed highlights of Jay teaching his children how to skate.
The crowd gave Beagle a loud, roaring standing ovation at the conclusion.
Alex Ovechkin even skated over and gave the team’s former fourth line center a big hug.
Beagle tried his best but failed to hold back his tears on the Canucks bench.
Tribute video just played in-arena for Beagle.
Standing ovation.
BEAGLE, BEAGLE, BEAGLE chant.
Ovechkin came over for a hug.

Beagle was hinted to the prospect of a tribute video earlier in the evening.
“I got a little intel there’s going to be a video, tribute video, and I’m not too excited about that,” Beagle said in the video. “I might hide my face in the jersey so you don’t see tears.”
Beagle signed with the Capitals as an undrafted free agent. He spent time with both affiliates, the South Carolina Stingrays and Hershey Bears, winning the respective championships in both. Once he joined the NHL club, Beagle played in 472 games and tallied 51 goals and 65 assists.
He made hockey history as the only player to win a championship in the ECHL, AHL and NHL, winning the Stanley Cup in his final season in DC.
