Even though they’re teammates, Logan Thompson is openly a big Alex Ovechkin fan, but recently the Washington Capitals tested just how deep his fandom ran.
To promote their recently released 2026-27 regular-season schedule, the Capitals posted goals Ovechkin scored against every team in the league.
For the Vegas Golden Knights, the club aired a clip of Ovechkin scoring on Thompson on April 20, 2022, while the goaltender was playing in his rookie season with the Western Conference team.
Thompson noticed that he made the cut and replied to the team’s video on Instagram with an upside-down smiley face: 🙃.
Ovechkin scored twice in the game — his 779th and 780th career goals — and made Thompson the 160th different goaltender he had beaten. The tallies were his 49th and 50th goals of the 2021-22 season, making him the oldest player in NHL history to reach the 50-goal mark.
That performance also gave Ovechkin his ninth 50-goal season, tying Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history.
“Obviously it’s pretty good company,” Ovechkin said that day. “Pretty happy. When you score the first one you feel pretty good about the game. It was a fun game, yeah, tough loss but we’re gonna move on.”
Thompson ultimately got the last laugh that day though, backstopping the Golden Knights to a 4-3 overtime win after Chandler Stephenson scored in sudden death. The victory was his ninth career win.
Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored in the game — his 24th tally of the season — while Nicklas Backstrom and Dmitry Orlov assisted on Ovi’s milestone 50th tally.
Thompson is one of 16 goalies in NHL history to be teammates with Ovechkin and also get scored on by him.
