Logan Thompson has been updating his Instagram avatar with ridiculous Alex Ovechkin pictures

Logan Thompson is not an active poster on Instagram, but there is one part of his social media account that he’s actively updating: his avatar. And it’s giving great joy to his followers.

Friday, ahead of the Washington Capitals game against the Colorado Avalanche, Thompson updated it to a photo with him cheesing together with Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals would then go on to win 5-2 in one of their best performances of the season.

For all those hardcore Thompsonmaniacs keeping track at home, this marked the third time the goaltender has changed his avatar to feature a different photo of Ovechkin during the 2024-25 season. And all three times have come before or after a victory.

The vibes of this photo are similar to this Connor McMichael/Alex Ovechkin picture from 2022.

Ah, the famous 2018 Stanley Cup Final screenshot of Ovechkin being interviewed by Pierre McGuire, which turned into a meme. This Thompson update came after a 6-5 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils.

Thompson’s first Ovechkin image featured the Capitals captain in a pink bunny suit from the team’s 2015 holiday card. The Capitals beat Thompson’s former team, the Vegas Golden Knights, 4-2 the day before.

The Instagram avatar updates featuring Ovechkin come after Thompson seemed to heroize Phil Kessel the same way while the two were playing together with the Golden Knights.

Whatever the reason, Thompson’s use of social media is different and I dig it.
