Justin Sourdif is already grinding away ahead of his second full NHL season with the Washington Capitals.

The 24-year-old forward is currently in Calgary, getting in some offseason workouts with Sutter Skills Development, a high-performance player development program run by former NHL forward Brody Sutter of the legendary Sutter hockey family.

In a recent clip posted to the program’s Instagram account, Sourdif can be seen doing drills with star Philadelphia Flyers winger Travis Konecny.

Other notable players involved in the camp this summer include Buffalo Sabres forward Peyton Krebs and former Capitals forward Sheldon Rempal.

Sourdif is coming off a rookie year with the Capitals in which he recorded 35 points (15g, 20a) in 78 games and finished 12th in Calder Trophy voting. He finished tied for eighth in rookie scoring. With Sourdif on the ice at five-on-five, the Capitals outscored their opposition 47 to 28, the second-best goals-for percentage (62.7 percent) on the team.

While Sourdif will be pushed down the depth chart, likely into the fourth-line center role, he is projected to be given even more responsibility as one of the club’s go-to defensive forwards after the departure of Nic Dowd.

Head coach Spencer Carbery has already mentioned Sourdif as a top option to take on some big shorthanded minutes, which he rarely had during the 2025-26 campaign, averaging just eight seconds of penalty-kill time per game. At five-on-five this past year, Sourdif also started almost 40 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone, which could see a major decrease if Carbery deploys his fourth line as he has in the past.

Sourdif is already eligible for a contract extension as he will become a restricted free agent next summer.
