Tom Wilson wants to swim in the White House’s fountain if the Capitals go back-to-back

The Washington Capitals visited the White House to celebrate their 2018 Stanley Cup championship with President Donald Trump on Monday. The trip came more than nine months after the team first raised the NHL’s championship trophy in Las Vegas.

Ahead of their game against the Carolina Hurricanes, Tom Wilson was asked whether visiting the White House was a distraction this late in the season.

He had this to say.

Michal Kempny spotted on crutches at Capitals White House visit

During the Washington Capitals’ game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 20, Michal Kempny was injured after being pulled down by Cedric Paquette and falling awkwardly to the ice.

The Capitals later announced that Kempny would be out of the lineup indefinitely.

Kempny’s lower-body injury is still unknown, but Monday at the White House, he was photographed using crutches.

The full transcription of Donald Trump’s Oval Office speech celebrating the Washington Capitals’ Stanley Cup

The Washington Capitals met with Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Monday, where Trump congratulated the team on the 2017-18 Stanley Cup championship win and wished them good luck in the 2018-19 playoffs.

Team owner Ted Leonsis and team captain Alex Ovechkin also said a few words thanking Trump and the the White House for their hospitality. Trump highlighted the play of defenseman John Carlson and nudged Carlson into making a speech as well.

The Washington Capitals’ White House visit

The Washington Capitals visited the White House on Monday to be honored for their 2018 Stanley Cup Championship. The team reportedly received a private tour of the presidential mansion, and met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

In a break from previous championship ceremonies, the tour and meeting were private and closed to the press (until the last minute), but that didn’t keep attendees from posting about it on social media.

Former Capitals Philipp Grubauer and Jay Beagle will not be at the Caps’ White House visit on Monday. President Donald Trump will host a private event for the team to celebrate their 2018 Stanley Cup championship.

Grubauer told The Athletic’s Ryan S. Clark that he would rather focus on the Avalanche’s playoff push.

Braden Holtby respectfully declines visit to White House

After the Washington Capitals announced they would visit the White House on Monday, reporters tried to clarify which team members would attend the visit.

Goalie Braden Holtby, an outspoken advocate of LGBTQIA+ rights, said he would address the media on the issue Friday after the teams morning skate.

Holtby will not be going to the White House. “I gotta stay true to my values and I’m gonna respectfully decline the offer,” he told the media after practice.

Brett Connolly on Trump White House visit: ‘I respectfully decline’

Last summer, after the Caps won the Stanley Cup, Caps forward Brett Connolly said he would not visit the Trump White House. “It has nothing to do with politics,” Connolly said. “It’s about what’s right and wrong.”

On Tuesday, after scoring his twentieth goal of the season, Connolly said he stands by that decision.
