During the Washington Capitals’ game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 20, Michal Kempny was injured after being pulled down by Cedric Paquette and falling awkwardly to the ice.

The Capitals later announced that Kempny would be out of the lineup indefinitely.

Kempny’s lower-body injury is still unknown, but Monday at the White House, he was photographed using crutches.

A second photograph was later posted by the Capitals, which gave a full body look at Kempny. The defenseman was not using his crutches but was leaning on forward TJ Oshie. Kempny did not appear to be wearing a boot, which may give a hint to the type of injury he suffered.

The Capitals cannot move Kempny to LTIR due to the number of games remaining in the 2018-19 regular season.

This led to the Capitals shuffling their roster around by calling up and reassigning Tyler Lewington to Hershey, before later adding Jonas Siegenthaler, as the cap space allowed.

Following the Capitals’ optional skate on Monday morning, head coach Todd Reirden confirmed to the media that Kempny’s injury was long term. Whether or not the defenseman will require surgery has not yet been decided.

“It’s going to be a long-term injury. He’s got a few more appointments to go through, but it’s going to be a long term injury. We’ll have more updates in the next few days here,” Reirden said.

Reirden said an official timeline will be released when a decision is made on the treatment for Kempny’s injury.

With the Czech defenseman on crutches, it appears unlikely that he will return to the lineup before the playoffs.
