Brett Connolly will join his teammate Devante Smith-Pelly and not attend the Washington Capitals’ visit to the White House. Connolly said his decision had “nothing to do with politics, it’s about what’s right and wrong,” and that there would be “a few guys not going.”

As we discussed on the podcast, we are not discussing off-season things until the off-season happens. Caps forward Devante Smith-Pelly – who has scored six goals this postseason – has no such policy. During Wednesday’s media time, Smith-Pelly – who has scored two game-winning goals, the same number as Alex Ovechkin – was asked what he thought of a possible Caps visit to President Donald Trump’s White House, should the Caps win the Stanley Cup.
Smith-Pelly – who has outscored Backstrom, Laine, Malkin, Marchand, Subban, Burns, Couturier, Couture, and Killorn – did not mince words.

Tuesday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Penguins officially accepted an invitation from the White House and celebrated their 2016-17 championship victory with President Donald Trump.
During the resulting ceremony, Trump called the Penguins a “truly great” team and captain Sidney Crosby “a real winner.” He also inspired boos from a pro-Penguins crowd after asking the team, in an offhanded remark, if the Capitals are a “tough” team to play against.
Over the last few days, hockey and the Trump administration have been as synonymous as peanut butter and jelly.
Last week, Press Secretary Sean Spicer was asked about Trump whether Trump roots for the Capitals and the Rangers during the daily afternoon briefing.
Now we have President Donald Trump’s first appearance with the Capitals brand. But this story does not have a happy ending.

Shortly after 11:30am on Thursday, a crowd gathered in front of The White House, but not for political reasons.
The Stanley Cup, the oldest and most revered trophy in all of professional sports, was touring Washington DC and hockey fans flocked to each location. At this particular stop, Howie, the keeper of the cup that day, was helped by a very enthusiastic and tiny Caps fan to set up the championship trophy.
This morning, the Pittsburgh Penguins visited the White House today to meet with President Barack Obama and celebrate their Stanley Cup win.
The ceremony began with a quip from President Obama.

Washington Capitals defenseman and everybody’s favorite bro from New Jersey, John Carlson, was named to the United States Olympic Team a few hours ago. But you already knew that. What you didn’t know, however, was to celebrate, the Caps scheduled Carlson to hold a press conference at 7pm in front of The White House.
It’s the third time over the past two decades that the team has used the White House as a backdrop, a rare occurance. It’s always cool, well minus one of the players that was involved. Let’s review!

Mike Green was back in a Capitals jersey on Friday, though unfortunately for him, he won’t be seeing game action in one for at least a week. Suffering from a concussion after taking a blow to the head from Derek Stepan of the Rangers, Green was placed on long-term injured reserve, holding him out until March 22nd at the earliest. Russian Machine Never Breaks caught up with the 25 year-old Canadian on Friday at the White House. Green had been invited to participate in a street hockey clinic at part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. The First Lady even asked Green how to drop the puck to begin the event. “I told her, ‘Just drop it. Don’t throw it up in the air,’ Green recalled. “She was fine.” He also had a front row seat when the Chicago Blackhawks were honored for their 2010 Stanley Cup championship by President Barack Obama. I assume, however, he would me much happier to be on the other side of that picture next year.
