Brian MacLellan: Alex Ovechkin under ‘an incredible amount of pressure’ due to Russia’s war with Ukraine

On Wednesday, Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan discussed how the team’s Russian players are doing and how the team is trying to help them after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has impacted their lives.

Generally describing Russian NHL’ers as being in an impossible situation, MacLellan explained why players haven’t come out against Vladimir Putin, who ordered an invasion of Ukraine last week.

Ilya Samsonov gets hurt during practice; Joe Snively, Carl Hagelin miss skate due to injury

The Washington Capitals are a mess. A Caps’ regular has left practice due to injury in consecutive days.

Wednesday, Ilya Samsonov was the latest player to get dinged up during a Peter Laviolette-guided skate. Samsonov absorbed a shot up high and did not return.

Ilya Samsonov leaves warmups, comes back, starts, and gives up a goal in 11 seconds

Ilya Samsonov was penciled in as the starter by head coach Peter Laviolette against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. The matinee game was scheduled to be Samsonov’s ninth straight start.

But it was an adventure getting Samsonov to that point.

Report: Montreal Canadiens inquired about Ilya Samsonov’s availability

RDS, a sports channel in Montreal, is reporting that the Canadiens reached out to the Capitals about the availability of goaltender Ilya Samsonov.

Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, who contributes to the hockey blog Dansles Coulisses, tweeted out the news.

Ilya Samsonov to get fourth straight start against Flyers, Justin Schultz out day-to-day

The Washington Capitals held their morning skate in Philadelphia hours before they’re slated to take on the Flyers for the second time this season. The team will look to win two games in a row for only the second time since the calendar flipped over into 2022.

Getting the netminding duties for his fourth straight start in a row will be Ilya Samsonov. The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir also reported that Vitek Vanecek hit the ice with the team as well. Vanecek is still working back from his upper-body injury and remains on injured reserve.

Alex Ovechkin misses first practice back from All-Star Break, will not play against Canadiens on Thursday

The Washington Capitals held an optional, afternoon practice on Monday. It was their first time hitting the ice as a team since the All-Star Break concluded.

According to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, notably missing from the ice were Caps captain Alex Ovechkin, Connor McMichael, and both mainstay goaltenders Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov.

Ilya Samsonov to start against Canucks, Dmitry Orlov and Carl Hagelin out of COVID protocol

The Washington Capitals goaltenders have been the talk of the town recently as head coach Peter Laviolette told reporters last week that the team was, “just looking for a little bit more consistency.”

Vitek Vanecek bounced back from a poor outing against the Boston Bruins with a shutout against the New York Islanders. It is now Ilya Samsonov‘s turn to tend the goal as he will get the second half of a back-to-back versus the Vancouver Canucks.

The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell also reports that Dmitry Orlov and Carl Hagelin are both out of COVID protocol and now activated but since they haven’t practiced for a good amount of time, their status is up in the air for tonight’s game.

Ilya Samsonov suffers injury during practice

Dmitry Orlov wasn’t the only Russian Capitals player to get injured on Tuesday. Goaltender Ilya Samsonov did too.

According to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, Samsonov left the ice at the end of practice “in some discomfort.” Sammy talked to head athletic trainer Jason Serbus before heading to the locker room.

Evgeny Kuznetsov available against Penguins, Ilya Samsonov to start in goal

The still-super-dinged-up and COVID-protocol-ridden Washington Capitals took the ice at Medstar Capitals Iceplex before their matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Friday.

On the ice was Evgeny Kuznetsov who left Thursday’s practice early with a lower-body injury. Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette assured the media Kuzy’s absence was just precautionary and Kuznetsov took full line rushes at Friday’s morning skate.

“I just didn’t want to practice,” Kuzy joked.

Capitals starting lineup still up in the air as team turns attention to Columbus Blue Jackets

The Washington Capitals will play the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night looking to break a two-game losing streak.

TJ Oshie and Conor Sheary are both possibilities to return to the lineup from their longterm injuries. Peter Laviolette added that the three players who took maintenance days on Friday — John Carlson, Garnet Hathaway, and Carl Hagelin — skated this morning and are “on track” to play per The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir.
