Devante Smith-Pelly gets loud ovation in return to Capital One Arena, drops ceremonial first puck

Devante Smith-Pelly made his grand return to Capital One Arena on Saturday, nearly four years after last suiting up for the Washington Capitals.

A lot of things have changed over those years: DSP retired and Alex Ovechkin is nearing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. But there’s one thing that remains a constant: Capitals fans still love DSP to the moon and back just like they did before.

Smith-Pelly was honored by the team on Saturday and was a huge part of the team’s Black History celebration against the New York Rangers.

Alex Ovechkin and Ovi Jr drop puck prior to Dynamo Moscow’s regular season opener

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was back out with his former KHL team Dynamo Moscow on Saturday. This time he brought his son Sergei to join in the fun.

Before Dynamo’s regular season opener against Ak Bars Kazan, Ovi and Ovi Jr took part in a ceremonial faceoff to kick off the team’s 2022-23 campaign. Dynamo’s Andrei Mironov and AK Bars’ Vadim Shipachyov took the pregame draw.

Joel Ward drops ceremonial puck while wearing Black Girl Hockey Club hoodie

Before Sunday’s game between the Capitals and Penguins, ex-Cap and current awesome guy Joel Ward returned to Washington, DC to drop the ceremonial puck.

Flanked by Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, Ward, wearing a Black Girl Hockey Club hoodie, was greeted by a standing ovation.

Joel Ward will return to DC to drop ceremonial first puck for Capitals’ Black History Night

The Washington Capitals announced over the weekend that fan-favorite Joel Ward will return to Capital One Arena on February 23rd for the Capitals-Penguins game. Wardo will take part in the ceremonial puck drop for Black History Night.

The Capitals will “honor diversity in hockey with tributes throughout the game.”

Connor McMichael, Team Canada players drop ceremonial puck at Leafs game after winning World Junior Championship

Washington Capitals 2019 first-round pick, Connor McMichael, was one of eight Team Canada players that were honored before the start of the Toronto Maple Leafs-Winnipeg Jets game on Wednesday.

McMichael, along with Kevin Bahl (ARI ’18), Nico Daws (’20), Ty Dellandrea (DAL ’18), Jamie Drysdale (’20), Aidan Dudas (LAK ’18), Liam Foudy (CBJ ’18), and Akil Thomas (LAK ’18), dropped the ceremonial first puck between Jets captain Mark Scheifele and Leafs captain John Tavares.

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer dropped the ceremonial first puck ahead of the Capitals-Rangers game. Except, Max didn’t bring a puck.

He brought a baseball.

Elena Delle Donne throws out first pitch at Nationals Park, drops puck at Capitals game on consecutive nights

The 2019 WNBA champion Washington Mystics won their first title last week. Two-time league MVP and gold medalist Elena Delle Donne has been welcomed by two other DC teams who recently achieved or are currently fighting for their own first championship victories.

Tuesday, she threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Nationals’ NLCS-winning game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Wednesday, she took the ceremonial puck-drop before the Capitals’ 4-3 comeback win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Alex Ovechkin drops ceremonial first puck before KHL game between Dynamo and Avangard

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was in Balashikha and dropped the ceremonial first puck before the Dynamo Moscow vs. Avangard Omsk preseason game on Thursday. Wearing a black hat and a Dolce & Gabbana t-shirt, Ovechkin flashed a smile before dropping the piece of vulcanized rubber between Avangard captain Alexei Emelin and Dynamo captain Vadim Shipachyov.

Ovechkin spent parts of five seasons with Dynamo Moscow during his likely Hall of Fame career, last playing for his hometown team during the NHL lockout in 2012.

Hi, PK 👋: Lindsey Vonn drops ceremonial puck between her hometown team and boyfriend’s team

The ceremonial puck drop at Sunday night’s game between the Minnesota Wild and the Nashville Predators featured a special guest that had ties to both teams: three-time Olympic medalist, alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn.

Vonn, who is widely regarded as the one of the greatest-ever Alpine skiers, is a native of St. Paul, Minnesota and was cheered on by her hometown crowd. She is also currently dating Nashville defenseman PK Subban.

Corporal Jeremy Hillson surprises family during Leafs’ ceremonial puck drop

The Toronto Maple Leafs hosted Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Night at Scotiabank Arena, Saturday. It turned out to be a very emotional evening.

The Maple Leafs honored the family of Corporal Jeremy Hillson during the ceremonial puck drop. Cpl. Hillson’s wife Jennifer, daughter Dakota, and son Mason joined Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and Leafs alternate captain Morgan Rielly at center ice. After a video message by Cpl. Hillson, the family was set to drop the puck — except there was one tiny problem: nobody had the ceremonial puck.

Get your tissues ready. This may be the best military family reunion ever.
