The Washington Capitals did not play their best game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but after some clutch goal-scoring and even clutchier goaltending, they pulled out the 4-3 victory in overtime.
While Capitals players remained humble after the game, the Capitals Twitter did not, saluting its biggest rival with a Penguins-shaped wordle L.
The Washington Capitals snapped a four-game losing streak against the New York Islanders on Saturday. Buoyed by goals from Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin, the Caps shut out the Isles 2-0 in their first trip to UBS Arena in team history.
To celebrate, the Capitals social team created a joke New York Post Page Six cover. The design featured a picture of Pete Davidson and the paparazzi-style headline read CAPS CALL IT QUITS WITH LOSING STREAK. Underneath, a subheader added Toxic Couple ends it in Long Island, Losing Streak now rumored to be dating Pete Davidson.
Garnet Hathway got checked into the Nashville Predators goal frame and got up swinging at a group of Preds’ players looking to harm him during the first period of Wednesday’s game.
From that moment on, the Capitals-Predators game was contentious and messy at every turn.
Even on social media.
Alex Ovechkin is one of the NHL’s greatest players and a deserving, perennial All-Star. Ovechkin has been voted to the All-Star Game by fans 11 times during his 17-year career, but he’s only played in seven of them.
Ovechkin missed the 2012 game due to a three-game suspension and the 2016 game because of injury. Then he sorta just stopped going. In 2019 and 2020, Ovechkin opted not to play, choosing instead to rest his machine-like frame and be suspended a game by the NHL.

The New York Rangers remade their team over the offseason. They hired a new coach, got a bunch of new players, and added a lot of toughness. The team and its fans had a lot of hope heading into the season opener. Instead, they ran into a buzzsaw in the Capitals.
The Caps beat the Rangers 5-1. Alex Ovechkin scored twice and had four points. Worst yet, there was only one fight in the game and it was between Trevor van Riemsdyk and Sammy Blais. Beyond the five hits Ryan Reaves doled out, the enforcer did nothing to assert himself in the game.
Afterward, the Capitals’ social media chirped Rangers fans.
The Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins renew their rivalry at 3 PM. Hours before puck drop, the two teams got a little spicy with each other on Twitter.
Inspired by the dating app Hinge, the Capitals published a fake profile of the Penguins and it just degenerated from there.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals’ social media beef is getting more personal… or manufactured. I haven’t really decided yet.
Saturday night, the Capitals, possibly admiring the Carolina Hurricanes’ team photo which featured every player in masks, followed the Canes on Twitter.
The two teams have picked on each other in the past so the Hurricanes’ posted a screenshot of the follow in their mentions with a spicy retort.
Like Tom Wilson, the Washington Capitals Twitter account has a long memory. And early Thursday morning, the Caps Twitter clapped back at the Los Angeles Kings in epic fashion.
Let me explain.
The Washington Nationals lost Game Three of the NLDS to the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 on Sunday. The Nationals led 2-1 until the Dodgers exploded for a seven-run sixth inning and batted around, giving the Dodgers an 8-2 lead.
The Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets showed good sportsmanship on the ice after the conclusion of their first-round series.
The team’s two Twitter accounts did so off the ice as well.
The New Jersey Devils are celebrating 666K followers on twitter. This is fun because they are the Devils and this is the number of Satan.
They decided to thank all the people that follow them, including the NHL Teams. Unfortunately, there is one team that doesn’t follow them and it rhymes with the Schm-ashington Schm-apitals. Yup, it’s our favorite team and in an attempt to try and cover their tracks, the Capitals twitter decided to not apologize, but instead bring the Vegas Golden Knights into the conversation and be bad at math.
Listen, I was very bad at math my entire life, but I am fairly certain I can count NHL teams. This marks my official campaign to run the Washington Capitals twitter account for a day.
