Capitals select Swedish forward, Oskar Magnusson, in seventh round of 2020 NHL Draft

After making their final scheduled draft selection, the Washington Capitals traded back into the seventh round and grabbed Oskar Magnusson from the Malmo Redhawks in the SHL.

The Caps took Magnusson, who has played parts of two seasons (including this current one) with the Malmo senior team in the SHL, with the 211th overall pick. The Caps acquired the pick used to take him from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for the Caps’ seventh round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Capitals select Canadian goaltender, Garin Bjorklund, in sixth round of 2020 NHL Draft

After passing on goaltenders in last year’s draft, the Washington Capitals picked up Garin Bjorklund in 2020 from the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Caps took Bjorklund, who played his first full season in the WHL last year, with the 179th overall pick.

Capitals select American forward, Bear Hughes, in fifth round of 2020 NHL Draft 🐻

The Washington Capitals couldn’t avoid the WHL for too long, making Bear Hughes of the Spokane Chiefs their third selection of the 2020 NHL Draft.

The Caps took the Idaho native, who walked-on and played his first full season in the WHL last year, with the 117th overall pick.

The Pittsburgh Penguins drafted Yogi Svejkovsky’s son

In the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins selected center Lukas Svejkovsky out of the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it is.

Lukas is the 18-year-old son of former Capital Yogi Svejkovsky, who was once a top prospect himself for Washington.

Capitals select huge Russian forward, Bogdan Trineyev, in fourth round of 2020 NHL Draft

The Washington Capitals’ second selection of the 2020 NHL Draft came in the fourth round.

With the 117th overall pick, the Caps selected Russian right-wing Bogdan Trineyev from Dynamo Moscow.

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin serves as an adviser to Dynamo Moscow.

Capitals select ‘top-ten talent’ Hendrix Lapierre 22nd overall after injury concerns

The Washington Capitals selected Hendrix Lapierre with the 22nd overall selection in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. NBCSN called it the “most interesting pick” in the first round. Lapierre plays for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the QMJHL and was the offensive rookie of the year during 2018-19 season.

The Capitals dealt their 24th overall pick and their 80th overall pick to Calgary to select the Canadian center at 22. Lapierre slipped down the draft board due to serious injury concerns.

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan announced the pick virtually from MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

Jeopardy host Alex Trebek announced the Ottawa Senators’ third overall pick. Who is Tim Stuetzle?

Alexis Lafrenière went first overall 2020 NHL Draft and Quinton Byfield was selected second, becoming the highest picked Black player in NHL history, The third overall selection was more of a toss-up so the Senators “enlisted the help of a special guest who also happens to be a graduate from the University of Ottawa,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said.

The NHL’s feed then cut to Sony Picture Studios in Culver City, California, as the Jeopardy! theme played.

“Here is your host of Jeopardy!, Alex Trebek,” announcer Johnny Gilbert said.

New York Rangers select Alexis Lafrenière first overall in 2020 NHL Draft

With the first pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, the New York Rangers selected forward Alexis Lafrenière. Lafrenière was captain for Rimouski Océanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Lafrenière, who joined the draft via video conference, threw on his new Rangers jersey and draft hat and smiled with his family on camera.

Capitals show off draft war room at MedStar Capitals Iceplex

The first round of the 2020 NHL Draft will be held at 7 PM Tuesday and it will have a different look than in past seasons.

The draft will be held remotely for the first time in 15 years due to a coronavirus that has claimed over 210k lives in the United States and recently infected Connor McDavid – the NHL’s biggest superstar in Canada.

Ahead of the draft, the Capitals posted a photo of their new setup in the team’s locker room at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.
