The Washington Capitals are apparently not big fans of three-goal leads. They fumbled one to the Boston Bruins a game after overcoming one against the New York Islanders but none of that matters because Alex Ovechkin is still king. The Great Eight fired the Caps to a 4-3 overtime victory.
The Bruins outshot the Caps 43 to 23 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 65 to 38.

Nicklas Backstrom scored his fifth goal of the season and tallied three points in the Capitals’ 4-3 overtime win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. With his big night, Backstrom moved into fourth in the NHL in points (13). The win also made the Capitals the best team in the league.
But postgame, you would have never known if you peaked into the haunted eyes of the Swedish center. While in the Zoom room with Tom Wilson, Backstrom stared into an empty void as if he had just seen The Demogorgon eat all his friends in The Upside Down.

Alex Ovechkin was forced to quarantine and didn’t play hockey for 10 days. When he returned, he was the same as he always was: dominant.
Ovi scored the Capitals OTGWG on Saturday, giving the undefeated-in-regulation Capitals their 15th standings point out of a possible 18. Ovechkin’s goal was historic, too. It was his 708th career goal tying him with Mike Gartner for seventh all-time on the NHL goals list.
After the game, the Capitals gave their captain props the only way they know how.
Just as you all predicted, Alex Ovechkin was the scorer of the game-winner in his first game back from his four-game unavailability/suspension/whatever due to COVID-19 protocols.
Scant seconds into overtime, Ovi beat Boston goalie Tuukka Rask on a solo effort.

The two teams at the top of the NHL’s East Division matched up for the first time this season as the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins did Saturday night battle. Which team would get the better of the other in the duel of returning 2019-20 Richard Trophy winners?
Nicklas Backstrom at the end of a shift found some energy to snipe the Caps into the lead. Trevor van Riemsdyk scored his first as a Capital to extend the lead to two. Richard Panik stood bodied home another on a man advantage.
Nick Ritchie deflected a puck home to give the Bruins their first of the night. Brad Marchand snuck home another. Charlie McAvoy tied things up with the goalie pulled.
Ovi wins it in overtime.

For the first time in fifteen years, defender Zdeno Chara was playing against the Boston Bruins instead of for them.
But late in the first period, Chara took a puck to the face and left the game.

Dmitry Orlov is a noted perfectionist and last week, he committed the biggest off-ice mistake of his career. Orlov violated the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols when he hung out with Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Ilya Samsonov in the same hotel room. The decision forced Orlov out of four Capitals games and maybe a fifth tonight against the Boston Bruins.
“It’s up to the coaches but when you don’t skate for 10 days, it’s always hard to come back,” Orlov said after returning to MedStar Capitals Iceplex for the first time in 10 days. “Especially if everybody keep playing. They in good shape.”
Alex Ovechkin spoke to the media on Saturday for the first time since missing four games due to a violation of the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols. During the Capitals’ first road trip of the season. Ovechkin spent time in the same hotel room as Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, and Ilya Samsonov. The NHL found out after Samsonov tested positive for COVID-19 and began contact tracing. The Capitals were fined $100,000 as a team.
Ovechkin said in a statement last Wednesday that he regretted his decision and that he would learn from the experience. Meanwhile, his wife, Nastya, criticized the NHL for how it handled the situation.
“It sucks, obviously,” Ovechkin said of being forced into quarantine. “No one wants to be suspended. No one wants to put yourself in that position. It’s over. You learn from it and move on.”

The Washington Capitals made several roster moves on Saturday morning with Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov off the COVID Unavailability List and Justin Schultz out hurt.
The Capitals announced that they promoted Philippe Maillet from Hershey to the Capitals’ Taxi Squad. The Capitals also announced that they had sent Connor McMichael to Hershey.
