Tom Wilson on his overtime goal: ‘I just didn’t want to have to go in the shootout so I figured we’d end it there’

Tom Wilson wore the A and was effectively the Capitals captain during the team’s first preseason game of the year. And he made a very important executive decision during overtime. Tied 3-3, Wilson went on a skate and determined it was time for everyone to go home.

After flying through neutral and gaining the O, Wilson peeled around Blackhawks forward Dylan Sikura and deposited the puck past Colin Delia for an emphatic game-winning goal 2:35 into the extra session.

“Just basic wide drive through to the net,” Wilson said nonchalantly of his tally. Then he smiled. “I just didn’t want to have to go in the shootout so I figured we’d end it there.”

Tom Wilson scores highlight-reel goal to secure 4-3 preseason win against the Blackhawks

The Washington Capitals opened their preseason campaign with a 4-3 win in overtime against the Chicago Blackhawks at Capital One Arena. Things were even on the scoresheet and in shots, with the deadlock broken by the good guys in OT.

Your Caps goal scorers in regulation were Damien Riat, Travis Boyd, and Aliaksei Protas. Tom Wilson won it in overtime.

Capital One Arena’s brand new jumbotron to make debut during Caps preseason opener

During the offseason, a second round of renovations was started at Capital One Arena. The main focus of these “Phase II” upgrades were enhancements to the video displays in and around the arena, as well as further concession upgrades and a facelift for the 200 level.

While many of the upgrades, such as the full scope of the LED “sky ring” boards, aren’t quite ready to go just yet, fans attending tonight’s first preseason game against Chicago will get a first look at the brand spanking new jumbotron.

The Washington Capitals play their first preseason game tonight against Chicago. Here’s their lines and roster.

You guys, the summer is officially over!

The Washington Capitals will play their first 2019-20 preseason game at home on Monday against the Chicago Blackhawks. It will serve as a Capitals debut for several players, including former Little Cap and Herndon, VA native Joe Snively, first round 2019 NHL Draft pick Connor McMichael, as well as new additions Brendan Leipsic and Garnet Hathaway.

As part of the Caniac Carnival, the Capitals’ Sept. 29 preseason game against Carolina will be free to attend

The Carolina Hurricanes will be hosting their 20th annual Caniac Carnival this season, a family-friendly event which includes inflatable rides, live music, and carnival games and booths.

The event culminates in a free NHL preseason game featuring the Washington Capitals.

That’s right, the Hurricanes are offering free tickets to see the Capitals play the Canes on Sunday, September 29, at 1:30pm.

Capitals announce 2019 preseason schedule

Days after a few dates were announced through other teams, the Washington Capitals have announced their full preseason schedule.

The Capitals will play six games against three opponents. Three of those games will be at Capital One Arena.

The next Capitals home game will be the team’s preseason opener on September 16 against the Chicago Blackhawks, 91 days away.

Alex Ovechkin scores twice in Capitals 5-4 (OT) loss to Carolina

Sebastian Aho scored 19 seconds into overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 5-4 victory at Capital One Arena, Friday night. The undefeated Hurricanes improved to 5-0 in the preseason while the defending champion Capitals fell to 1–3-2.

The Caps lone bright spot on the evening was Alex Ovechkin who scored twice, giving the 2018 playoff MVP three goals in three preseason games.

John Carlson will make his preseason debut tonight in St. Louis

On Tuesday, the Capitals will play the Blues for their fifth game of the preseason as both teams prepare their lineups for the start of the regular season.

The big news is on the blue line, where John Carlson will make his return from a lower-body injury and play his first game of the preseason. Carlson, who signed an eight-year extension with the Capitals over the offseason, is slated to reunite with partner Michal Kempny on the first defensive pairing, as the two defensemen see their first action since helping the Capitals win the Stanley Cup.

Jonas Siegenthaler and Madison Bowey will play on the third pair, with Bowey looking to impress and lock up his spot as the seventh defenseman.

Devante Smith-Pelly will once again be held out of tonight’s game.

Devante Smith-Pelly will be held out of the Caps preseason game on Tuesday too

Devante Smith-Pelly has yet to appear in any of the Capitals preseason games and that won’t change on Tuesday in St. Louis. Todd Reirden announced on Monday that Smith-Pelly is getting closer, but is not quite at the point of playing in a game yet.

Last week, Reirden told reporters that Smith-Pelly was still working to “get to the level where he was at last year,” and was choosing to sit the forward until then.

Sergei Shumakov will make his preseason, North American debut against the Hurricanes

The Washington Capitals are down in Raleigh, North Carolina’s PNC Arena to face off against the Carolina Hurricanes for their fourth preseason game and second exhibition in consecutive nights. Thursday, the Capitals lost to the Montreal Canadiens 5-2, falling to 0-3 in the preseason. Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal since Game Five of the Stanley Cup Final.

Russian forward Sergei Shumakov will make his highly-anticipated preseason debut, Friday. Shumakov led CSKA Moscow with 40 points (17g, 23a) in 47 games over the course of the 2017-18 KHL season. Shumakov will play alongside Lars Eller and Chandler Stephenson on the second line, with possible deployment on the power play.
