The NHL season is just about halfway over, so we’re using the moment to pick our faves for end-of-season trophy winners. The NHL Awards are messy and infrequently go to the players who actually deserve to win, so our picks reflect who should win the award, not necessarily the traditional front-runner. Capitals shuffle defensive pairings with Matt Niskanen unlikely to play Saturday in Ottawa

Defenseman Matt Niskanen is not expected to play against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night, and the Washington Capitals will have to change their defensive pairings accordingly. Niskanen did participate in his first morning skate after sustaining a scary upper-body injury during Thursday’s 3-1 victory over the Hurricanes but is still listed as day-to-day.

The Capitals’ forward lines remain the same. Pheonix Copley will get the start in net, giving Braden Holtby the night off. Copley got his first career shutout against the bottom-dwelling Senators the last time these two teams met.

Andre Burakovsky returns to lineup against Buffalo after being a healthy scratch for four-straight games

After losing 2-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday, Capitals’ head coach Todd Reirden is altering his lines — albeit subtly.

Andre Burakovsky will be back in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.

It will be Burakovsky’s first game in nearly two weeks — a December 8 game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Capitals recall Tyler Lewington from Hershey Bears

The Capitals recalled defenseman Tyler Lewington from the Hershey Bears on Saturday morning. This is the first career call-up for the 24-year-old defenseman. The Capitals re-signed Lewington to a two-year, $650,000 AAV contract in May.

Blues goal disallowed after puck ricochets into the net off referee Tim Peel’s, uh, banana

Things have been rough for the Blues this season, and Tuesday was another bad night–however, not for the Blues, just for referee Tim Peel.

In the first period of the Blues’ 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers, St. Louis had their first goal of the game disallowed when a Robert Bortuzzo dump-in nailed Peel in his family jewels.

The puck then ricocheted towards the net and dribbled past Panthers’ goaltender Roberto Luongo.

Alex Ovechkin breaks record for most career hat tricks by a Russian-born player with 21

Alex Ovechkin broke the NHL record for most career hat tricks by a Russian-born player in the Capitals’ 6-2 victory over the Red Wings Tuesday night.

Ovechkin passed Pavel Bure with his 21st career hat trick. It was Ovechkin’s first hatty of the season.
