On Sunday, Alex Chiasson scored two goals in the Oilers 5-2 loss to the Kings.
Chiasson, who now has 10 goals, is the third highest goal scorer on the Oilers, trailing only Connor McDavid (13) and Leon Draisaital (13). Chaisson’s 10 goals in 17 games already eclipses his total of 9 goals in 61 games with the Capitals last season.
How crazy is Chaser’s goal-scoring this season? He has more goals than Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Nikita Kucherov, and Jamie Benn. And remember, he missed six games in October as a healthy scratch.
Chiasson jammed home his first goal in front of the net on the power play off of a beautiful feed from Connor McDavid in the first period.
The goal was Chiasson’s second power-play goal of the season. Chiasson worked his way onto the Oilers’ first power-play unit after he was scratched to start the season. It looks he’ll be staying there for a while.
Chaisson’s struck again in the second period on a similar play. He picked up a rebound in front of the net, made a nifty move, and slipped the puck past Kings’ goaltender Cal Petersen.
With his second goal of the night, Alex Chiasson tied Phil Kessel, Mikko Rantanen, Matt Duchene, and Auston Matthews with 10 goals on the season. Chiasson is tied for 31st in the NHL for goals scored this season. Sunday’s loss was the sixth multi-goal game of Chiasson’s career.
Chaisson signed a one-year, $650,000 AAV contract, and he looks like the Oilers’ best summer addition so far. At his current pace, Chiasson would hit the 40-goal mark for the season.
But, that’s unlikely to happen. Chiasson is currently shooting an insane 41.7 percent (10 goals on 24 shots), up from his career average of 12 percent. While his goal production will inevitably come back down to earth, Chiasson is playing the best hockey of career and has earned his spot in the Oilers’ lineup for the remainder of the season. And perhaps years to come.
That’s worth celebrating.
