Connor McDavid: certified not-that-much of a draft guy?

McDavid’s wife, Lauren, posted two videos on her Instagram story of the Oilers’ captain playing pool basketball around 8 pm Friday night, right in the middle of the 2026 NHL Draft.

In all fairness, the former first overall pick didn’t have any potential new teammates to watch for, as Edmonton’s first selection wasn’t until well into the second round of the draft, when they selected center Rudolfs Berzkalns 58th overall on Saturday morning. Additionally, the pool party appeared to be part of a celebration for his wife’s birthday.

Lauren also posted a photo of McDavid and about 20 friends on a boat earlier in the day, and McDavid sent her birthday wishes on his story.

While he seems to have had a pretty good reason for his seeming disinterest in the next generation of players, McDavid has certainly been enjoying his offseason despite his new coach being Mike Babcock. Two weeks ago, he also attended a Canada World Cup matchup, where he was caught downing wine.
