Connor McDavid had a good Friday afternoon, taking in the beautiful game from his home country.
McDavid was in attendance as his home nation, Canada, hosted Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Toronto’s BMO Field. The Edmonton Oilers superstar downed a glass of wine as he took in the 1-1 draw from a luxury box in the raucous stadium.
The 3-time NHL MVP is free to enjoy an early summer for the first time in two years after his Oilers team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, breaking a streak of two appearances in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Canadians went down early in the match, allowing a set-piece goal from Bosnian striker Jovo Lukic. The team, managed by American Jesse Marsch, ultimately went into the half with that deficit and required some substitutions late in the second half to turn the game around.
Marsch brought on striker Cyle Larin in the 75th minute, and the newly signed Southampton man needed just three minutes to draw the Canadians level.
The Canadians controlled the majority of the second half and were unlucky to find a second goal and secure their first-ever win at a World Cup. Instead, they’ll settle for their first-ever point, a good start in a Group B that also features Switzerland and Qatar.
McDavid wasn’t the only Canadian star in attendance, either, as actors Ryan Reynolds and Mike Myers were spotted among the announced 43,002 fans. The Grammy Award-winning Alanis Morissette also closed the match’s opening ceremony with a rendition of “O Canada,” the national anthem.
The Canadians will be back on home turf in Vancouver on Thursday as they host Qatar.
