TJ Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov respond to Nate Schmidt’s suspension

On September 2, former Washington Capitals defenseman Nate Schmidt was suspended for the first 20 games of the 2018-19 NHL season for violating the performance-enhancing substances policy.

While several details surrounding the specifics of Schmidt’s violation are still unknown, he released a statement following the suspension, suggesting that the substance found was consistent with environmental contamination. Schmidt, ultimately, lost his appeal.

On Friday, at the NHL’s media day in Chicago, both TJ Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov commented on Schmidt’s suspension.

No one knows anything about Nate Schmidt’s suspension for PEDs

The last suspension for violating the NHL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs came in late 2016, when 37-year-old Shawn Horcoff lost 20 games of what was his final pro season. The announcement on Sunday that Nate Schmidt would miss the same number was shocking for its rareness and for its mystery. There’s so much we don’t know and will likely never know about the violation.

Inside Brian MacLellan’s last-minute attempt to keep Nate Schmidt on the Capitals

LAS VEGAS — Defenseman Nate Schmidt scored 36 points in the 2017-18 regular season, his first with the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. Schmidt, 26, had totaled 41 points in his previous 200 NHL games — all of them with the Washington Capitals.

In 2013, Schmidt was plucked from thin air by then-Capitals general manager George McPhee who thought the undrafted free agent had the potential to be a standout, top-pairing backstop after four years at the University of Minnesota.

McPhee did not get to see his flower bloom. He was kicked out of town by Capitals owner Ted Leonsis a year after signing Schmidt.

Former Capitals Nate Schmidt, GM George McPhee lead Vegas Golden Knights to Stanley Cup Final in inaugural season

227 days after its franchise’s first ever regular season game, the Vegas Golden Knights are going to the Stanley Cup Final. Sunday afternoon, the Golden Knights defeated the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 at MTS Centre, becoming the third franchise in NHL history to play for a championship in its inaugural season, joining the Toronto Arenas in 1918 and St. Louis Blues in 1968.

The victory also continues a redemption story for former Capitals general manager George McPhee and the Knights’ first pairing defenseman Nate Schmidt — a frequent scratch of Barry Trotz despite numbers that suggested he was a top-tier NHL D-man.

Nate Schmidt sends Game Two to overtime with late third-period goal

Nate Schmidt scored his first career postseason goal for the Vegas Golden Knights in thrilling fashion.

Down 3-2 with 6:32 remaining in the third period, Schmidt ripped a one timer past Martin Jones to tie the game.

Jimmy Fallon features Alex Ovechkin and Nate Schmidt in NHL Superlatives bit

The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon did another round of his NHL Superlatives, Friday, and a few players popular with Caps fans were featured.

Fallon joked about Alex Ovechkin’s caveman appearance. He also gave a fake award to former Capitals defenseman Nate Schmidt again.

Nate Schmidt helps Golden Knights fan get out of work early to attend game

When the Vegas Golden Knights visited San Jose to take on the Sharks on March 23, Golden Knights fan William Rothwell-Torres was excited to head to the SAP Center and see the game. But, there was one small catch. Rothwell-Torres wasn’t scheduled to leave work with enough time to make it to the SAP Center from San Francisco for puck drop.

Looking like he was out of options, Rothwell-Torres decided to send a tweet to the Golden Knights, asking for their help to come up with an excuse to get out of work early.

Within an hour, the Golden Knights responded.

Gold medal-winning US Women’s Hockey Team drops puck before Kings-Golden Knights game

Five days after winning their first goal medal in 20 years, the United States Women’s Olympic Team, featuring Rockville, Maryland native Haley Skarupa, returned stateside and was honored at STAPLES Center Monday night.
