Thursday, Capitals goaltending prospect Ilya Samsonov posted a picture of himself in a hospital bed at an orthopedic clinic in Rome, Italy. Samsonov described himself as “feeling in great shape” after “everything went as well as possible,” without giving any details about the procedure he underwent.

The Russian hockey world was rocked on Saturday by the sudden loss of Sergei Gimaev. Gimaev suffered a heart attack during the second period of “The Match of Legends,” an alumni game for former Soviet hockey players that took place earlier today in Tula, Russia.
Several Russian players in the Capitals’ organization, including Alex Ovechkin, Dmitry Orlov, and goalie prospect Ilya Samsonov, paid tribute to Gimaev on social media.

Caps goalie prospect Ilya Samsonov celebrated his 20th birthday Wednesday by helping Metallurg Magnitogorsk be victorious during Game 1 of the Gagarin Cup playoffs. The team beat Beijing-based Kunlun Red Star 4-2, with Samsonov stopping 26 of 28 shots for a .929 save percentage.
Samsonov, whose strong play this season won him a place in the starting lineup for the playoffs, saw reasonably light duty. But that’s not to say the game lacked for action.

Capitals goalie prospect Ilya Samsonov blanked Traktor Chelyabinsk in a 1-0 shootout win on Friday night, closing out the regular season for Magnitogorsk. Samsonov made 31 saves over 65 minutes of regulation and overtime, and stoned two out of Traktor’s three shooters in the shootout.
Early in the game, Metallurg was off to a slow start. Samsonov possessed the necessary mix of skill and luck to prevent what easily could have been a 3-0 Traktor lead by the start of the second.

Capitals goaltending prospect Ilya Samsonov stopped 36 of 39 shots in a 3-2 loss to Vityaz Podolsk on Wednesday. Although Samsonov was outstanding — he turned away 13 shots during the first period alone — two of the three goals he gave up show areas where the 19-year-old is still vulnerable: rebound-control, positioning, and protecting the top shelf.

Capitals top goaltending prospect, Ilya Samsonov, suffered a rare loss Wednesday night as Metallurg Magnitogorsk fell to Avangard Omsk 5-2. It was only the 19-year-old’s second regulation loss in 22 KHL games this season.
But that doesn’t mean Samsonov didn’t have his moments. Such as seven minutes into the first period where Ilya made a series of insane, sprawling saves. Diving back and forth across the crease in a crazed effort to deflect shot after shot, the Metallurg Magnitogorsk goalie (and the post) turned away three quality scoring chances at the same time.

Capitals goalie prospect Ilya Samsonov had two strong showings over the weekend in KHL action, during which he kept Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the running against a pair of worthy opponents. Samsonov’s technical ability and athleticism were both on full display as he made 47 saves on 49 shots. These two appearances were his first since backstopping Russia to a bronze-medal finish in the World Junior Championships.
