Sergei Shumakov and Ilya Samsonov assigned to Hershey after Capitals trim roster to 30

The Capitals have once again trimmed their roster a day after sending eight players down to Hershey including Axel Jonsson-Fjallby.

Thursday’s cuts include KHL top-20 point-getter Sergei Shumakov and top goaltending prospect Ilya Samsonov.

Both Shumakov and Samsonov will play their first seasons of North American hockey in the AHL. Shumakov has said previously that he understood and was willing to start in the minor leagues, and has no plans of returning to Russia.

Vanacek, who spent last season as backup goaltender to Pheonix Copley, will most likely split time in net with Samsonov this season.

Tyler Lewington and Michael Sgarbossa, who were placed on waivers yesterday, have cleared and will report to Hershey’s training camp.

The Capitals are down to 19 forwards, 9 defenseman, and 2 goaltenders. The roster must be trimmed to 23 before the October 3 home opener.
