Henrik Lundqvist’s shocking announcement that he would not play this season due to a heart condition rocked the Capitals organization and the NHL community as a whole. But inside the walls of MedStar Capitals Iceplex, Hank’s exit also represented, as sad as the circumstances, an opportunity for the team’s young goaltenders who have been in a fierce and friendly competition for NHL playing time over the last few years.
Wednesday, Brian MacLellan confirmed that Ilya Samsonov would be the Capitals’ starting netminder next season during the Capitals general manager’s first press conference since Lundqvist’s announcement was made.
Mac added that while the team was open to possibly adding a veteran goalie via free agency or trade, they were also content with their depth at the position.

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan talked to reporters on Wednesday for the first time since Henrik Lundqvist announced he would not play during the 2020-21 season due to a heart condition. After the Rangers bought out the future Hall of Famer in October, the Capitals signed the 38-year-old netminder to a one-year, $1.5 million deal to be Ilya Samsonov’s backup.
During the chat, MacLellan revealed that he was personally bummed to not see Hank suit up for the team, but was grateful that the Vezina Trophy-winner could get the medical attention he needs before something serious happened.
Henrik Lundqvist is one of the most beloved players in the NHL, and, on Thursday, the hockey world collectively gasped when Hank revealed he had a heart condition that would keep him out of the 2020-21 season.
Lundqvist immediately received an outpouring of support from the NHL community, including from his teammates and NHL teams at large. It did not go unnoticed by The King.
On Sunday, Lundqvist took to Twitter to say thank you.
Henrik Lundqvist was one of the Capitals’ prized signings over the offseason, but weeks later, Hank had sad news to share. On Thursday, the future Hall of Famer announced he would be unable to play next season due to a heart condition.
“Today is a pretty tough and emotional day for me,” Lundqvist said. “For several weeks now, I’ve been undergoing several different tests related to a heart condition and after lots of discussions with doctors around the country and finally receiving the last results this week, I, unfortunately, won’t be unable to join the team this year and [will] continue the process to fix these issues.”
Two Capitals’ players particularly shaken by the news were Nicklas Backstrom and Carl Hagelin, who both were looking forward to going into battle with Hank next year. Backstrom has played with Lundqvist on the Swedish National Team, but never in the NHL, while Hagelin was a teammate and one of Hank’s best friends on the Rangers.
