Alex Ovechkin broke the NHL record for most career hat tricks by a Russian-born player in the Capitals’ 6-2 victory over the Red Wings Tuesday night.
Ovechkin passed Pavel Bure with his 21st career hat trick. It was Ovechkin’s first hatty of the season.

Three-time Cy Young award-winner Max Scherzer was at Capital One Arena Tuesday night. He saw quite a hockey game.
Alex Ovechkin scored his 21st career hat trick, leading the Capitals to a 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
Scherzer, sitting in the lower bowl, knew exactly what to do after Ovi scored goal number three. The Nationals pitcher chucked his hat on the ice.
The moment was captured by NBC Sports Washington reporter Al Koken.
Alex Ovechkin just scored a hat trick on RMNB’s ninth birthday.
After scoring in both the first and second periods, Ovi lit the lamp again in the third, sending a seeing-eye one-timer past Jimmy Howard.
The goal was Ovi’s third of the game, his 21st career hat trick.
The hats came flying down.

While Tom Wilson’s latest questionable hit hogged all the headlines, Nicklas Backstrom quietly — as if there’s any other way he does things — had one of the best games of his career.
The Swedish center had four points, including his first hat trick since December 2014.
Alex Ovechkin, who has benefitted his entire career playing alongside the unselfish Backstrom, finally had an opportunity to return the favor. With 22 seconds left in the third period, Ovechkin passed up on an opportunity for an empty-net goal, instead dishing to Nicky for the hatty.
It was a wonderful moment.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, who are looking to three peat, were on another level in their 7-0 Game One win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Capitals prospect Travis Boyd had the biggest game of his AHL career Friday north of the border. Boyd scored four goals, registering his second career AHL hat trick in the Bears’ 6-3 win over Laval Rocket (Quebec). Boyd scored once in the first and the second periods, adding two more goals in the third.
According to the Hershey Bears, Boyd became the first Bear since Paul Carey last March against the Hartford Wolf Pack to score four times in a single game.
Thursday night, the Colorado Avalanche jumped all over the Capitals, 6-2. The scoreline looks ugly, but the game was even uglier, as the Caps looked outclassed by the Avs all night.
In the middle of this was forward Gabriel Landeskog, who arguably put the Capitals away for good, scoring on a penalty shot early in the third period for his second goal of the night. He would follow it up with a third goal late in the third – his first career hat trick.
His teammates were very happy for him.

Coming into Saturday night’s game with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Hershey Bears had struggled mightily this season. Having lost four straight to start the campaign, the Bears needed a big performance to get back on track. They got just that from Chandler Stephenson.
Stephenson, who played in four games for the Capitals last season and was one of the final players cut from the big-league roster this year, recorded a hat trick to go along with an assist. The forward’s strong night led the Bears to a 4-2 victory, their first of the young season.

The official NHL scoresheet is telling me that Alex Ovechkin has a four-goal game. With a light touch late in the second period, Ovechkin recorded his seventh goal of the season in the second period of the second game of the season.
Nothing makes sense anymore, and it’s beautiful.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is one of the greatest goal-scorers of all-time and Saturday he accomplished something that no other player has done in 100 years.
