Oskar Magnusson wins bronze medal with Team Sweden at 2022 World Junior Championship

The 2022 World Junior Championship wrapped up on Saturday with Canada taking down Finland in the gold medal game. Before that matchup, Sweden triumphed over Czechia to win bronze. On that Swedish team was Washington Capitals prospect Oskar Magnusson.

Magnusson, the Capitals’ seventh round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, skated on Sweden’s third line in the 3-1 victory, ending the game with a shot on goal in 13:48 of ice time. The Swedes were led from the net out as 2021 Minnesota Wild first-round selection Jesper Wallstedt made 27 stops en route to the podium.

Haakon Hanelt’s game-winning goal against Switzerland sends Germany to World Junior quarterfinals

Team Germany has advanced to the 2022 World Junior Championship quarterfinals after taking down Switzerland in a close 3-2 matchup on Saturday.

Capitals’ prospect Haakon Hanelt played a big part in the victory, scoring the game-winning marker late in the second period. It was his first goal and point in three games of tournament action.

Capitals prospect Oskar Magnusson named to Sweden’s World Junior Championship team

Washington Capitals’ 2020 seventh-round draft selection Oskar Magnusson has made Sweden’s U-20 World Junior Championship team. Magnusson was a recent participant in DC for this year’s Development Camp.

The Swedish forward had originally made this Swedish team when the tournament was first planned to be held and played in two games before it was shut down due to COVID-19.

Capitals prospect Haakon Hanelt named to Germany’s World Junior Championship team

Washington Capitals’ 2021 fifth-round draft selection Haakon Hanelt has made Germany’s U-20 World Junior Championship team. Hanelt was recently in DC for this year’s Development Camp.

The German forward will join up with his teammates in Edmonton where the entire tournament will be played in mid-August.

2022 World Junior Championship tournament canceled due to COVID

According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, the 2022 World Junior Championship has been canceled. Positive COVID cases saw the USA, Russia, and Czechia all forced to forfeit recent group stage games and future forfeits were expected.

Wednesday afternoon, Chris Peters of Daily Faceoff reported that the IIHF tournament directorate was to meet today to discuss the future of this year’s tournament. It appears they ultimately came to the conclusion that the cancellation of the remaining games was the best option.

Hendrix Lapierre snubbed from Canada’s World Junior Championship team

One of the reasons why the Washington Capitals sent Hendrix Lapierre back to junior this season, beyond a lack of playing time, was so that he could play on Team Canada’s 2022 World Junior Championship team.

“It’s a lot for a young player to I think to handle the NHL and the league itself,” Laviolette said in November right after the transaction was announced. “So we sent him back to juniors where he can play against his peers and who knows what happens from here, whether he gets a chance to play in the World Championships and whether he gets a chance to play in playoffs. If all those things could happen, you think about his year and it’s really in a great spot.”

Lapierre, however, will not get an opportunity to play for Team Canada as he was a surprise snub from the team. Lappy was one of nine players cut from the team’s selection camp on Sunday. Capitals defense prospect Vincent Iorio will also not suit up for the team.

Capitals’ Hendrix Lapierre and Vincent Iorio makes Team Canada’s World Junior selection camp

The Washington Capitals could end up having two prospects playing for Team Canada during the 2022 World Junior Championship this winter.

Wednesday, Canada announced that Capitals’ 2020 first-round pick, center Hendrix Lapierre, and 2021 second-round pick, defenseman Vincent Iorio, have made its World Junior selection camp.

Thirty-five players made the roster. The camp will begin on December 9 in Calgary.
