Five former Capitals medaled in the 2022 Winter Olympics

Stanislav Galiev (2014-2016) was one of five former Capitals to medal in the 2022 Winter Olympics held in Beijing, China.

Galiev was a member of the silver medal-winning ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) – the designation of Team Russia players due to the country’s Olympic doping penalties.

The other former Capitals to medal on the ROC include Sergei Fedorov (2007-2009) and Sergei Gonchar (1994-2004), who were assistant coaches, and Ilya Kovalchuk (2020)- the team’s general manager.

John Walton will be part of NBC’s Olympic broadcast team for both men’s and women’s hockey in Beijing

Capitals’ radio play-by-play maestro, John Walton shared some big news Monday afternoon. Walton will be calling another Olympic Games as NBC has tasked him to be part of their broadcast team for both men’s and women’s hockey in Beijing.

This will be the second time Walton has done Olympic hockey for NBC as he covered women’s hockey at the 2018 Games in Pyeonchang, South Korea.

Walton made the announcement on his personal Twitter account.

Three former Capitals make Canadian Olympic team after IIHF accidentally posts roster day early

The IIHF confirmed in mid-January that players under NHL contract will not be permitted to play in the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics. Due to that, nations have been scouring minor leagues and other professional leagues from around the world to fill their rosters.

Canada planned to announce their roster on January 25. But, Monday, the IIHF leaked it a day early.

Canada chose three former Capitals to its team.

Former Capitals defenseman Aaron Ness makes US Olympic roster

A report a week ago said that former Capitals defenseman Aaron Ness would be getting an invite to Team USA’s 2022 Olympic hockey roster. It looks like he accepted that invitation.

Thursday evening, he and 24 others were officially announced as part of the squad traveling to Beijing to try and win gold.

Former Capitals defensemen Jakub Jerabek and Tomas Kundratek make Czech Olympic roster

After the IIHF re-affirmed that no players under NHL contract can play in the Beijing Olympics, nations are filling their rosters from the rest of the world’s best leagues.

Thursday, the Czech Republic announced their Olympics roster which includes former Capitals defensemen Jakub Jerabek and Tomas Kundratek.

Report: Former Capitals defenseman Aaron Ness invited to play for Team USA at Beijing Olympics

After the NHL and NHLPA announced in a joint decision to not have NHL players participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing, respective nations are turning to players playing elsewhere to fill their rosters.

According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, former Capitals defenseman Aaron Ness is on the shortlist of invitees for Team USA.

Brad Marchand has thoughts about the NHL’s Olympic decision

Boston Bruins forward and pest, Brad Marchand, took to Twitter to share an opinion about the NHL’s recent decision to shutter its participation in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Marchand, in one big run-on sentence that featured a lot of ellipses, said it’s horse dung that the NHL and NHLPA can institute a taxi squad during the regular season to keep playing NHL games, but can’t roll with call-ups and reserves while star players go to the Olympics. Marchand even volunteered to forfeit pay while away from the team.

NHL players will not participate in 2022 Beijing Olympics due to latest COVID-19 surge

Multiple media sources are reporting that NHL players will not participate in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski writes that a formal announcement from the league should be expected within the next 24 hours.

The two sides had until January 10 to opt-out of the Winter Olympics without financial penalty.

Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner becomes first NHL player to opt out of Olympics

Vegas Golden Knights starting goaltender Robin Lehner has informed Team Sweden that he will be opting out of the 2022 Winter Olympics due to health reasons.

Lehner is one of only two Swedish goaltenders that is a starter this season so he surely would have been invited to Beijing.

Tom Wilson confirms he’s on Canada’s long list for a possible spot in the Olympics

Tom Wilson being in contention for Team Canada at this year’s Winter Olympics has been rumored for some time now. We now know from the man himself that those rumors were true.

Wilson told NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti that he is undergoing IOC testing due to being on Canada’s long list of 55 players in contention for a roster spot at the 2022 Games.
