Capitals announce dates for rookie tournament, media day, and start of training camp

In a release from the team, the Washington Capitals have announced their full schedule for the week leading up to Training Camp, including media day and their participation in the 2019 Prospect Showcase.

The rookie tournament will go from September 5-10 and be hosted by the Predators in Nashville, Tennessee. Previous tournaments have been held in Florida, with rookies from the Capitals, Predators, and Panthers participating. The roster of rookies participating in the tournament is TBD.

Hockey season is right around the corner, and if you wanna see the Caps in person next season, now’s your chance.

Washington Capitals single-game tickets were scheduled to go on sale to the general public on Friday, August 9, at 10 AM on the Capitals website, but the Caps just made them live a few minutes ago with this special promo code.

Tenth and final Leap Towards a Cure hockey tournament hopes to raise $200,000 for cancer research

For the 10th and final year, the Gardens Ice House in Laurel is hosting the Leap Towards a Cure hockey tournament from August 3-7, raising money for cancer research, treatment, and education at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD.

The tournament is operated by the Andrea Henderson Memorial Fund, a volunteer-only 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization. Every penny of the proceeds from the tournament will support cancer research at the Kimmel Center. Since the tourney’s beginnings, Leap Towards A Cure has raised over $165,000 and counting for the Kimmel Center. This year, the tournament is hoping to hit a goal of over $200,000 in total donations over the course of ten years.

Hershey Bears sign NHL veteran Matt Moulson to one-year AHL contract

The Capitals’ AHL affiliate Hershey Bears added a new forward to their lineup Wednesday afternoon, signing Matt Moulson to a one-year AHL contract.

The 35-year old brings a veteran presence to the Bears’ locker room, having played 650 NHL games with the New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres. Moulson was an assistant captain during his time with the Sabres.

The forward has played 305 games in the AHL, most recently with the Ontario Reign.

Local brewery Devil’s Backbone to release a Capitals-themed Beer, Capit-Ale

The Washington Capitals and Virginia-based brewery Devil’s Backbone have teamed up to create their own Caps-themed beer: the Capit-Ale India Pale Ale.

Beginning in September, with the start of the Capitals preseason, the beer will be available to purchase at Capital One Arena in 16 oz. cans. The beer will also be available on draft at “select retail locations” in Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. According to the packaging, the IPA has favor notes of “citrus, melon and… winning.”

INOVA to host special Caps-themed blood donation drive in Dulles and Woodburn on July 17

Every year, the Capitals host a series of blood drives as a way for fans to help others in the community. The Capitals’ partner for these blood drives, INOVA Blood Donor Services, is hosting a special Caps-themed blood drive event at two of it’s locations on Wednesday, July 17.

Caps fans who visit INOVA’s donation centers in Dulles from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m and Woodburn from 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. will receive a Caps rally towel and their choice of bobblehead OR t-shirt, while supplies last. The players whose bobbleheads are available were not listed on the notice. Fans who donate will also be entered into a drawing for a Capitals backpack.

From September 5-10, the Caps will once again be participating in a rookie tournament, this time hosted by the Predators in Nashville, Tennessee. Previous tournaments have been held in Florida, with rookies from the Capitals, Predators, and Panthers participating.

Capitals release full schedule for 2019 Development Camp

The NHL’s offseason is in full swing, but the Capitals organization is still keeping busy as they prepare to host a gaggle of talented prospects at Medstar Capitals Iceplex for their 2019 Development Camp.

Jeopardy host Alex Trebek among presenters at 2019 NHL Awards

On June 19, the 2019 NHL Awards will be held in Las Vegas and be hosted by SNL’s Kenan Thompson.

On Monday afternoon, the NHL announced that one of the headline presenters for the evening will be longtime “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek. Trebek, who was born in Canada and is a very big hockey fan, will be helping hand out one of the top awards for the evening (though the specific award is currently unknown).

The event marks one of Trebek’s first public appearances since announcing back in early March that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
