The Washington Capitals have made their first signing on the opening day of free agency, and it’s a minor one.
The club inked forward Jonny Brodzinski to a one-year, one-way contract. The 33-year-old veteran center will earn $850k in both the NHL and AHL.
Brodzinski has played the past six seasons in the New York Rangers organization, spending the last two years solely in the NHL. Before that, he had split time between New York and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, where he was the club’s captain for three seasons.
In 55 games for the Rangers last season, Brodzinski recorded 16 points (6g, 10a). His single-season career high in points at the NHL level, achieved twice with the Rangers, is 19 points. He was over a point-per-game player in the AHL during his last stint with the Wolf Pack in 2023-24, notching 25 points (11g, 14a) in 16 games.
Brodzinski was originally a 2013 Los Angeles Kings draft pick and spent time with both the Kings and San Jose Sharks before joining the Rangers in 2020.
