The Toronto Maple Leafs now have their best player under contract through 2027-28.
The Leafs announced that they signed star center Auston Matthews on Wednesday to a four-year, $53 million extension that pays $13.25 annually.
The contract will kick-in during the 2024-25 season. Matthews has one year remaining on his five-year, $58.195 deal that he signed on February 5, 2019.

Ellis will drive the number 43 Chevrolet Camaro full-time in 2024 and compete in every single race of the Xfinity Series season for the first time in his career. Ellis first made his NASCAR debut in 2012 and has competed in every major NASCAR series including Cup and Truck throughout his career.
“This announcement is truly a dream come true,” Ellis said. “My team and I have been working so hard to be able to get to this point.”
The Washington Capitals announced Friday that they signed forward Tom Wilson to a seven-year, $45.5 million extension worth an annual average value of $6.5 million. The contract kicks in 2024-25 after his current deal expires, and ends after the 2030-31 season.
Wilson, 29, becomes the only Capitals player with a contract extending past 2028.

The Hershey Bears added to their defensive depth on Wednesday. The Bears announced they have signed defenseman Colin Swoyer to a one-year AHL contract. Swoyer split last season between the ECHL and AHL in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ organization.
The 25-year-old is a Michigan Tech graduate and has 41 career games of experience with Hershey’s rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The right-handed blueliner has also got into six games for the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers.

The Hershey Bears have signed forward Kevin O’Neil to a one-year AHL deal. O’Neil made his AHL debut with the Bears last year, playing two games for Hershey on a PTO.
In 53 games with the South Carolina Stingrays last season, O’Neil tallied 50 points (24g, 26a). He also played three games on an AHL PTO with the Colorado Eagles.

The Hershey Bears made a depth free agent signing on Monday, inking forward Tyson Empey to a one-year, one-way AHL deal. Known for his physical play, Empey could serve a big role with the ECHL South Carolina Stingrays next season.
The 28-year-old spent time last season with both the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners and the ECHL’s Atlanta Gladiators in 2022-23. Over parts of two seasons with the Roadrunners, Empey logged 13 total fighting majors in 79 games.

The Hershey Bears announced they’ve resigned defenseman Benton Maass for the 2023-24 season on an AHL contract. Maass was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the sixth round of the 2017 draft and has played the past two seasons in the organization.
Maass played the majority of last season in the ECHL with the South Carolina Stingrays where he got into 55 games and recorded 11 points (4g, 7a).
He has played three career games for the Bears over the past two years.

The Hershey Bears are bringing back another member of their 2023 squad that took home the franchise’s 12th Calder Cup.
Hershey announced on Friday that they have re-signed defenseman Jake Massie to a two-year AHL contract. Massie played in nine playoff games en route to the Cup win and will return to the Bears next year for his third season with the club.

The Hershey Bears are reportedly set to add Vienna, Virginia native and former US Olympian, Garrett Roe, to their organization on a one-year contract according to Inside AHL Hockey’s Tony Androckitis.
Roe, a forward that has played the last ten seasons in Europe, was signed with the ZSC Lions through the 2023-24 campaign but is returning to North America for personal reasons and will play for the Bears in the AHL.
