TJ Oshie’s beer chug through his jersey at the Capitals Stanley Cup championship rally was one of the most iconic and memorable moments of the team’s title run in 2018.
But little was known about why Oshie did it, until now. Speaking to Men In Blazers’ Roger Bennett, Oshie revealed that it had something to do with wine and peer pressure from Tom Wilson.
“We were having a team night out,” Oshie said when asked about the roots of his party trick. “I did it right in front of Tom Wilson’s face at the restaurant with a glass of wine. Ruined my shirt.”
Fast forward to the Capitals championship rally on June 12 and Oshie couldn’t not do it.
“So we go on stage and we’re told we’re going to kind of go up one after another. My plan was to kind of keep it together, but then I saw Brooks Orpik, who’s very strict with his diet and his training, and he went up and started chugging a beer and then Tom was sitting next to me. He looked over and was like, “You have to do it.”
The beer trick got huge cheers from the hundreds of thousands of Caps fans set up on the National Mall. Throughout the summer of 2018, Oshie did the beer chug multiple times, including at the American Century Championship – a golf tournament that includes professional golfers, celebrities, and professional athletes.

After the Nationals won the World Series, Oshie and Adam Eaton did the beer chug when the Nats visited Capital One Arena to celebrate their first championship in team history.

The entire locker room chanted Back to Back as Oshie performed the trick and held one finger in the air. Sean Doolittle held the Commissioner’s Trophy in the background and lifted it high into the air.
In the interview, Oshie also revealed that he’s a glass half full type of person.
“I’d rather be someone that’s a joy to be around than someone that you’ve got to tiptoe around,” Oshie said. “I love life, I love where I’m at. I love what I’ve been able to do. I love what I’m hopefully going to be able to do.”
He’s also hoping he has a chance to do the beer chug again this June.
“I think it’s a must,” he said.
