TJ Oshie will return to the ice when he visits his alma mater, the University of North Dakota, in January.
No, he won’t be playing in a game; he’s just suiting up for One More Shift, a pregame promotional event and tradition for the Fighting Hawks. Oshie will participate on January 15, ahead of UND’s game against St. Thomas.
The special night features legendary program alumni, who return to their collegiate home rink and skate a few laps in full uniform before the current team’s pregame introductions. They also join the starting lineup for the national anthem.
Per the team’s promotional schedule release, UND Hall of Famer and 1980 National Champion Mark Taylor will participate on October 17, and both former players will be honored with a pregame ceremony.
Beginning the tradition in 2018, the Fighting Hawks are 9-1 in games featuring a One More Shift promotion. Other UND alumni who have skated One More Shift include Dennis Hextall, Ed Belfour, Jim Archibald, Brandon Bochenski, Dave Christian, Matt Green, Tony Hrkac, Ryan Duncan, and Dixon Ward. Last season, Zach Parise participated before a game against Miami on February 14, 2026.
Oshie played three seasons at UND from 2005-2008, recording 142 points (59 g, 83 a) in 129 games. During his 2005-06 freshman season, he led the team in scoring and scored 9 game-winning goals — setting a school record. His sophomore season, he received the Cliff “Fido” Purpur Award as the player whose hard work and determination generate excitement.
The former Washington Capitals winger was named an AHCA All-American and a Hobey Baker finalist his junior season. He helped the team reach the Frozen Four in all three of his college campaigns before signing with the St. Louis Blues and beginning his 1,010-game NHL career.
After severe back injury issues, Oshie announced his NHL retirement last summer. He has since transitioned to broadcasting, doing TV work for both ESPN and Monumental Sports Network.
