Monday morning, the St. Louis Blues announced that they signed veteran forwards Troy Brouwer and Jamie McGinn to professional tryouts.

Brouwer has not played since being cut from Florida Panthers training camp in September. He’s remained in Calgary since then and has been skating with a junior hockey team.

“The thought process going into that was we’re down to 12 healthy forwards right now,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. “I think in our game in Calgary, I think we had eight players on our roster with less than 200 NHL games, and we started five guys with less than 100 at the start of the season. It’s an experienced league and we wanted to see if there were any experienced players that could help us. I don’t know where they’re going to be at. McGinn skated in Carolina, played a couple of games in the American League. Troy Brouwer has been skating with the junior team in Calgary. We’ll give those guys a look.

“Also with our depth in the American Hockey League, we’re really excited with how Nathan Walker is playing… But when you look at their experience, their experience is not there. We don’t want to get into a situation when we have 11 or 12 players without experience. As I said, there are no guarantees for Jamie or for Troy, but we’re going to bring them in and get a look at them.”

Last week, the Blues lost Alexander Steen for a month after he suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Edmonton Oilers. The reigning Stanley Cup champion Blues are also without their best goalscorer, Vladimir Tarasenko, who underwent shoulder surgery in late October. Tarasenko will be out for at least the next five months.

Brouwer and McGinn will practice with the Blues on Tuesday. The Blues have 10 days to make a decision on if they want to sign one of the players. If they do, they can start playing in NHL games.

Armstrong said Brouwer and McGinn will be practice with the team for 10 days before a decision is made on whether Blues will extend a contract. They cannot play in a regular-season game on a tryout contract. #stlblues

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Monday the team has signed forwards Troy Brouwer and Jamie McGinn to professional tryouts.

McGinn will join the Blues for practice Monday, while Brouwer will practice with the club beginning Tuesday.

Brouwer, 34, was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh round, No. 214 overall, in the 2004 NHL Draft. Last season, the 6-foot-3, 213-pound forward dressed in 75 regular-season games with the Florida Panthers, posting 21 points (12 goals, nine assists) and 47 penalty minutes. The Vancouver, B.C., native is a veteran of 13 NHL seasons, including his 2015-16 campaign with the Blues, where he helped the team reach the Western Conference Finals.

Overall, Brouwer has amassed 362 points (181 goals, 181 assists) and 588 penalty minutes in 838 career regular-season games. He has also appeared in 102 career postseason games and captured the 2010 Stanley Cup Championship with the Blackhawks.

McGinn, 31, was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the second round, No. 36 overall, in the 2006 NHL Draft. This season, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound forward has appeared in two games with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Charlotte Checkers. A native of Fergus, Ontario, McGinn is a veteran of 11 NHL seasons. Including stints with San Jose, Colorado, Buffalo, Anaheim, Arizona and Florida, he has amassed 220 points (117 goals, 103 assists) and 267 penalty minutes in 617 career regular-season games. McGinn has also posted eight points (four goals, four assists) and 42 penalty minutes in 36 career postseason games.
