The Washington Capitals are very close to having their full roster on the ice after Thursday morning’s informal skate.
Tom Wilson, one of the team’s alternate captains, was the latest to join his teammates for the early September workouts. Wilson jumped on the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex after flying back from Las Vegas, where he was serving as Washington’s representative at the NHL/NHLPA North American Player Media Tour.
The 32-year-old winger is headed into his 14th NHL season with the Capitals.
Earlier this week, Wilson participated in the NHL’s annual preseason event out west, where he met with and filmed content for national hockey media outlets, broadcasters, and many of the league’s corporate partners.
At the event, Wilson also met up and chatted with recent Team Canada Olympic teammate and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.
Wilson, the NHL’s active leader in penalty minutes and fights, will be part of a new-look, much deeper group of Capitals forwards this upcoming season. Head coach Spencer Carbery relied on Wilson heavily this past year, giving him a career-high 19:27 of ice time per game, a number he has said he hopes will come down now that the club has more firepower up front.
During the 2025-26 campaign, Wilson became a 30-goal scorer for a second straight season, notching 30 markers in 72 games. He finished second on the team in scoring with 62 points, behind only captain Alex Ovechkin (64).
After Wilson’s arrival at Washington’s practice facility on Thursday, the last central piece of the team’s roster yet to arrive is Ovechkin. The legendary winger is scheduled to arrive back in Washington, DC, sometime later on Thursday.
