Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff attended the Washington Spirit game and was a featured member of the on-field celebration on Saturday. The Spirit hosted their annual “Pride Game” against the San Diego Wave.
The Second Gentleman was front and center for the team’s walkout to the field, smiling and waving to the fans in attendance. He also rocked his own customized jersey for the game.

Sportico’s Emily Caron and Eben Novy-Williams are reporting that Alex Ovechkin is not *actually* an investor of the Washington Spirit.
Ovechkin did not complete the paperwork or send in his check to become an investor in the National Women’s Soccer League team and missed out on what could have been a “fast and potentially lucrative return” per the reporters.
The announcement that Ovechkin invested in the team was made shortly before the first round of the 2021 playoffs where the Washington Capitals took on the Boston Bruins — one of the busiest times of the season. In the summer, the Spirit became embroiled in a constant wave of controversy, including an abuse scandal and a very public, months-long ownership fight, which is where Ovechkin may have had pause to put his name and money behind the team.
The Washington Spirit won its first NWSL championship on Saturday. The players raucously celebrated the victory on the field and in the locker room, but a larger celebration with DC fans will wait.
The club announced on Monday that the Spirit’s championship parade will be held at the start of next season. The Spirit explained that it would give “our staff and players to take a much-deserved break for the holiday.” Waiting “allows us the time to plan a memorable celebration worthy of this championship team.”
Alex Ovechkin became an investor of the National Women Soccer League’s Washington Spirit over the offseason. Six months later, the team is champions of the league.
The Spirit beat Chicago Red Stars 2-1 at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. The championship is the Spirit’s first ever NWSL title and comes in their ninth season as an organization.

The Washington Spirit fell 3-2 against NJ/NY Gotham FC on Sunday night after playing more than 84 minutes down a player due to an early red card.
The Spirit, who count Alex Ovechkin as one of their recent investors, played host at Leesburg’s Segra Field for only the second time this season. Riding high on a 2-0 win against the NC Courage in the previous week, the Spirit looked ready to take on their East Coast rivals Gotham FC.

Just as the Capitals were allowing fans back into their home arena on Tuesday night, across town, the NWSL’s Washington Spirit were doing the same. The Spirit welcomed its home crowd back in the stands for the first time since 2019. Over 2,000 fans dotted the stands of Audi Field in socially-distanced groups as the Spirit faced off in a scoreless draw against NJ/NY Gotham FC (formerly Sky Blue FC).

The Washington Spirit, D.C’s National Women’s Soccer League team, has a new group of investors heading into their ninth season and you might have heard of them.
According to the Washington Post’s Steven Goff, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of President Bill Clinton, and Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of Geroge W. Bush, are among those new investors. Maryland-native Dominique Dawes, a former Olympic gymnast best known for being the first African American woman to win an individual medal in gymnastics, and Briana Scurry, the former U.S World Cup goalkeeper, are also investing in the Spirit.

After the USWNT’s gold-medal triumph during the 2019 World Cup, the question that remained was whether women’s soccer would be able to capitalize on the huge popularity it saw this summer. On Saturday, August 24, the Washington Spirit answered the question of what that success could look like in the NWSL.
The Washington Spirit sold out every seat in DC’s Audi Field, with 19,871 in attendance, smashing their previous franchise record for attendance (7,976) by over double. The team’s usual home stadium, Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland, tops out at around 5,500.
