Current and former Capitals teammates say really nice things about Nicklas Backstrom

The Washington Capitals went all out to celebrate Nicklas Backstrom’s 1,000th NHL game on Thursday.

The team formed a stick tunnel for Backstrom to skate out to, players wore number 19 jerseys during warmups, and the organization held a pregame ceremony which included a touching tribute video.

The Capitals also debuted a splash page on their website dedicated to all things N1KY, including 20 sweet video messages from Nicky’s past and former teammates and coaches.

Nicklas Backstrom’s 1000 games ceremony includes tribute video, gifts, and Capitals team photo at center ice

Nicklas Backstrom was honored for playing in his 1,000th NHL game Thursday during a sweet pregame ceremony. Joined on the ice by his fiancé, Liza; the couple’s three kids, Haley, Vince, and Alizee; and Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan, Backstrom stood in the corner as the team celebrated his 14-year career in the NHL.

The Capitals first played a tribute video over the jumbotron featuring kind words from his teammates, and family.

Capitals players form stick tunnel for Nicklas Backstrom as he makes his way onto the ice for 1000th NHL game

On a night where Nicklas Backstrom is being honored for his milestone 1000th NHL game, the Capitals went all-out to celebrate the occasion.

The team formed what NBC Sports Washington’s Al Koken termed a “stick tunnel” — a pseudo honor guard — to welcome Backstrom onto the ice for warmups ahead of his big game.

Capitals post tons of tributes to Nicklas Backstrom ahead of center’s 1,000th NHL game

The Washington Capitals are going all out on Nicklas Backstrom’s big day. The team is wearing special warmup jerseys and shirts before the Swedish center’s 1,000th game.

The Capitals are also posting a ton of tributes to Backstrom on social media.

Peter Laviolette’s speech before Nicklas Backstrom’s 1,000th game

Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette made two special speeches on Thursday. He congratulated Conor Sheary on his new two-year extension out on the ice. Inside the locker room, Laviolette gave props to Nicklas Backstrom for what will be his 1,000th NHL game on Thursday night.

The Capitals gave fans a rare glimpse inside of the room and posted video of what Lavy said to Backstrom.

Nicklas Backstrom will play in his 1,000th game Thursday against the Sabres. Capitals players will all wear no. 19 jerseys during warmups.

Nicklas Backstrom will become the 356th player in NHL history to play in 1,000 games Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres. When the puck drops, the Swedish center will officially join Alex Ovechkin as the second player in franchise history to play in 1,000 games for the Capitals.

Wednesday, in anticipation of the big game, the Capitals announced several tributes they have planned to honor Backstrom on his milestone.
