Capped-out Capitals will play with 17 skaters against Islanders with Ovechkin, Oshie, Mantha, TvR and Dowd out of lineup

The Washington Capitals will kick off the final week of their regular season with a home matchup vs the New York Islanders on Monday night. The Caps took the ice for their morning skate before the game and absent again was captain Alex Ovechkin.

According to the Washington Post’s Roman Stubbs, Ovechkin will miss his second-straight game due to an upper-body injury. Ovechkin has not skated since April 6 in Montreal.

Unfortunately for the Caps, Ovi’s absence was only the start of their woes as they will also be without TJ Oshie, Anthony Mantha, Nic Dowd, and Trevor van Riemsdyk against the Islanders.

Nic Dowd takes maintenance day, Alex Ovechkin returns to practice

The Washington Capitals had their second-straight day of practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex and had more chaos within their forward group. At Monday’s skate, the team skated with just 10 healthy forwards for the majority of practice.

Tuesday’s skate saw Alex Ovechkin back on the ice after taking his third maintenance day in the month of March.

But fourth-line center Nic Dowd was missing due to taking a maintenance day of his own per The Washington Post’s Roman Stubbs.

Nic Dowd sets new career high in goals with 14 games left to go in season

Nic Dowd continued his excellent season Tuesday night.

The fourth-line center scored his 12th goal of the season setting a new career high.

The milestone goal came in the second half of the third period after Dowd put a shot on net from the left circle just after the expiration of Washington’s power play. Though Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin stopped the initial shot, Dowd caught the rebound to send the puck into the net.

‘Guys are grumpy’

The Washington Capitals fell to the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Tuesday. The loss was the team’s fifth consecutive in regulation – a lowly streak not matched in the Ovi Era since January 2014.

The loss allowed the Red Wings to leapfrog the Capitals in the wild card standings and further pushed the Capitals out of playoff contention — they now sit 11th in the East — as the NHL trade deadline rapidly approaches.

After the game, Nic Dowd, who played his first game in nearly a month (January 16), admitted the Capitals are feeling the pressure and bad vibes. They have become a grumpy bunch.

Nic Dowd activated from injured reserve, Aliaksei Protas sent to Hershey

Nic Dowd has been activated from the injured reserve before the Capitals are set to take on the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. The fourth-line center is no longer listed on the IR on the NHL’s media site.

To make room for Dowd’s return to play, the Caps announced that they have sent forward Aliaksei Protas back to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

Nic Dowd to be game-time decision against Red Wings, Darcy Kuemper will make fourth-straight start

The Washington Capitals jumped on the ice this morning after losing four straight games in regulation and on a mission to not let that streak get to five. To do so, they’ll need to take down a hard-charging Detroit Red Wings team.

Head coach Peter Laviolette heavily shifted his forward lines and defense pairings at Monday’s practice. Those big changes will see their first game action on Tuesday night.

Nic Dowd skates in regular practice jersey, possibly could play against Red Wings

The Washington Capitals took the ice for practice on Monday and head coach Peter Laviolette put the whole lineup into a blender after four consecutive regulation losses.

Among those changes was the reincorporation of Nic Dowd into full line rushes. Dowd officially shed his dark blue non-contact jersey for the first time at the skate and was given his fourth-line center role back.

Nic Dowd throws football to fans in crowd before Stadium Series game

With nearly 57,000 fans at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium for Saturday night’s Stadium Series game, Nic Dowd got a few of them into some pre-game fun.

Dowd, who remains out of the lineup following an injury during January 16th’s game against the New York Islanders, was spotted tossing a football back and forth with fans near the ice.

Tom Wilson, Nic Dowd, and Marcus Johansson all participate in Capitals outdoor practice before Stadium Series game

The Washington Capitals took the ice at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium on Friday night for their outdoor practice before they’re slated to play the Carolina Hurricanes on the same rink on Saturday.

Present at the skate for the Caps were three forwards that may be injury doubts for the actual game. Tom Wilson, Nic Dowd, and Marcus Johansson all donned practice sweaters and got in regular drill work with the rest of their teammates.

Tom Wilson and Nic Dowd participate in optional practice before game against Florida Panthers

Several Capitals players took the ice for an optional practice on Wednesday ahead of the team’s next game against the Florida Panthers. Injured players Tom Wilson and Nic Dowd were among the group that got some work in.

Both forwards have been out since prior to the All-Star break with respective lower-body injuries. According to The Washington Post’s Roman Stubbs, Wilson skated in a regular jersey while Dowd sported a non-contact jersey.
