Nic Dowd skates before game against Senators after missing previous practice with illness

The Washington Capitals are in Ottawa to take on the Senators in a battle of North American capital cities. The Caps did not host a morning skate before their date with the Sens, but the team’s scratches and goaltenders did get some work in on Thursday morning inside Canadian Tire Centre.

One of those players on the ice was Nic Dowd. Dowd missed the Capitals’ last practice at home with a non-COVID illness before setting off on this trip up north.

Nic Dowd misses practice

After going two full days without games, the Washington Capitals got a long skate in at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. While they got Tom Wilson back and out of his non-contact jersey, they were missing their hero from Monday night.

Nic Dowd, who had two goals and assisted on the overtime game-winner against the Red Wings, was not at practice. Dowd had a non-COVID illness.

Nic Dowd scores twice in 11 seconds, assists on overtime winner in career best game

Nic Dowd has a nose for the net and a good shot, but he’s not a relied-upon goal-scorer. The fourth-line center is utilized by Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette as a faceoff specialist and a shutdown forward, with a majority of his zone starts coming in the defensive zone. Offense from the Huntsville, Alabama, native is a bonus.

Monday against the Detroit Red Wings, the Capitals hit the Nic Dowd jackpot as the pivot had points in three of the Capitals’ four goals on the night.

Darcy Kuemper to back up Charlie Lindgren against the Red Wings

Darcy Kuemper, who wants to bring back the dinosaurs, is also bringing himself back to the Capitals’ active roster. Kuemper has not appeared in a game since getting elbowed in the head during a game against the Calgary Flames on December 3 – sixteen days ago.

Charlie Lindgren will start against the Detroit Red Wings, but Kuemper will dress and be the backup after being cleared by team doctors.

Lindgren and Kuemper were the only goalies on the ice during the Capitals’ morning skate.

Capitals announce that both TJ Oshie and Nic Dowd are day-to-day with injuries

The Washington Capitals announced on Sunday that both veteran forwards TJ Oshie (upper-body) and Nic Dowd (lower-body) are day-to-day with injuries.

Oshie left Saturday’s victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs early after pulling up lame on a backcheck. Dowd missed the game entirely.

Nic Dowd and Hunter Shepard to miss Leafs game due to injury

The Washington Capitals cannot escape the injury bug.

Saturday night, the Capitals announced before warmups in a surprise that the team would be without Nic Dowd and Hunter Shepard against the Toronto Maple LEafs. The Atletic’s Tarik El-Bashir reported the news on Twitter.

Dowd has a lower-body injury while Shepard is nursing an upper-body issue.

Braden Holtby, Capitals fourth-line make appearance at Garnet Hathaway beer release for ‘Hath’s Hazy’

Following in the footsteps of Capitals alumni Craig Laughlin and Alan May, Garnet Hathaway released his own beer on Monday. And the fourth-line winger got the support from a litany of current and former Caps during a release party.

Earlier in the year, Hathaway partnered with Other Half Brewing to create Hath’s Hazy. The sales benefit DMV first responders – a cause near and dear to Hathaway’s heart.

Capitals help cancer survivor meet Alex Ovechkin at team bus after Blue Jackets game

Washington Capitals players are a good bunch and on Sunday, Bally Sports Ohio’s Dave Maetzold shared another example.

The rink-side reporter for the Columbus Blue Jackets revealed that Capitals players helped a fellow fan and cancer survivor meet Alex Ovechkin at the team bus after missing the Caps captain the Columbus Blue Jackets preseason game. Ovechkin signed the fan’s jersey and took a photo, sending them “over the moon with excitement.”

Ovechkin, who played the night before against the Detroit Red Wings, did not dress against the Blue Jackets on Saturday, but watched from above at Nationwide Arena as a healthy scratch.

Maetzold pointed out that the interaction was private and “organic.” He added, “Just great players being human.”

Nic Dowd lands the biggest hit of the preseason… on Alex Ovechkin?

The Washington Capitals held another intense Training Camp session on Saturday – their third day back on the ice since officially returning from the offseason.

Saturday, Group A started practice with a two-on-two battle drill sometimes called “Off The Wall.” Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov teamed up to take on Nic Dowd and Dmitry Orlov during their rotation. You might think Dowd covering Ovechkin would be a physical mismatch, but, you guys, it totally was not.

While making a move and turning back up the ice with the puck, Dowd ran into Ovechkin… and absolutely trucked the Capitals captain.
