Tom Wilson and Nic Dowd miss another day of practice before Caps return to play against Bruins

The Washington Capitals got on the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Friday for their second straight day of practice after returning from the All-Star break and their bye week.

Thursday’s practice saw injured forwards Tom Wilson and Nic Dowd test things out before the rest of the team took their full skate. According to The Athletic’s Tarik El Bashir, neither skater was present on Friday as the Caps prepare to travel to Boston to take on the Bruins in their first game post extended time off on Saturday.

Tom Wilson misses Capitals’ first practice back from break, reportedly has ‘noticeable limp’

The Washington Capitals returned to practice on Thursday after a nine-day break. The NHL paused for All-Star Weekend and the Capitals had their bye week immediately afterward.

Capitals’ star Tom Wilson was absent from practice as he still tries to rehab a lower-body injury. According to The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir, Wilson got some work in before the team’s skate, but left with a “noticeable limp.”

Nic Dowd provides an update on his lower-body injury after missing four games

Capitals center Nic Dowd last played on January 16 against the New York Islanders. After just 57 seconds of ice time in that game, he took a hit from Isles forward Cal Clutterbuck that took him out of action with a lower-body injury. Afterward, Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette said Dowd would be out for a bit.

Dowd has missed four games in a row since then as he works to get himself back healthy and into the lineup.

He spoke about that process with 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier on Wednesday.

Nic Dowd to miss game against Wild with injury, Lars Eller draws back into lineup

The Washington Capitals have been bit by the injury bug yet again.

Nic Dowd left Monday night’s contest against the New York Islanders very early due to a lower-body injury.

Head coach Peter Laviolette announced on Tuesday that Dowd would miss the team’s game against the Minnesota Wild and be out for “a bit”.

Nic Dowd leaves Islanders game after big hit from Cal Clutterbuck

The Washington Capitals lost Nic Dowd several minutes into its game against the New York Islanders.

The fourth-line center was injured during his second shift of the game after absorbing a big hit from Cal Clutterbuck. Dowd was clearing the puck out of the Capitals’ zone near the team’s bench. It cut his second shift short to 15 seconds.

“That (hit) jammed him between his two legs,” Craig Laughlin said while NBC Sports Washington showed a replay. “He went hard into the boards.”

Caps players choose their favorite books for a Little Free Library book-sharing box at MedStar Capitals Iceplex

Playing hockey and reading books may not be synonymous with each other, but the Washington Capitals are trying to change that.

On Monday, the Capitals announced that they launched a Little Free Library book-sharing box in the lobby at MedStar Capitals Iceplex to provide book access to all Caps fans and encourage more reading.

The book-sharing box includes various hockey-related titles as well as books written by Capitals alumni and media. A dozen Capitals players also contributed the most recent book they’ve read either by themselves or out loud to a family member.

Aliaksei Protas to be healthy scratch against Predators

Aliaksei Protas is celebrating his 22nd birthday today. What did Peter Laviolette get him as a present? Protas will be a healthy scratch against the Nashville Predators.

The Washington Capitals’ young Belorussian will sit for the first time this season after playing in the first 41 games of the season.

Protas will be replaced in the lineup by Nic Dowd, who missed Thursday’s game in Columbus due to the birth of his second child.

Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson will not dress against Predators, Nic Dowd returns

Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette announced during his pregame press conference on Friday that neither Nicklas Backstrom nor Tom Wilson will be in the Caps lineup for their game against the Nashville Predators.

The only returning player will be Nic Dowd. The team’s normal fourth-line center missed Thursday’s game in Columbus due to the birth of his second child.
