Karl Alzner is the iron man of the Washington Capitals. In every game since October 8, 2010, Alzner has played a vital role: lots of minutes against tough competition, plus killing penalties.

While Alzner is an unspectacular player (the polar opposite of Alex Ovechkin), he had been solid in his role. And with a $2.8-million RFA deal, Alzner had been affordable too.

But there has been a stark change in Alzner’s impact this season, and it puts the Caps in a difficult position as we near the trade deadline and, this summer, free agency.

Caps players and families have ‘best Valentine’s Day ever’ in the Bahamas

On Monday we found out that the Alzners, Oshies and Winniks are vacationing together in the Bahamas during the Caps’ bye week. Tuesday night, we found out it’s not just the three couples and their kids. The Backstroms and Johanssons are with them, too.

In a post calling it the “Best Valentine’s Day we’ve ever had,” Taylor Winnik shared a photo of the whole 20-person crew, including some unidentified friends or family members, hanging out on the beach at Atlantis Paradise Island.

The Oshies, Alzners, and Winniks are vacationing together in the Bahamas

The Washington Capitals have dispersed all across North America for their NHL bye week, and on Monday, we found out an amazing bit of news. The Oshie family, the Alzner clan, and the Winnik crew are all vacationing together at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.

The Oshie family included TJ, his wife Lauren, their two daughters Leni and Lyla, and Lauren’s sister, Ally. Karl and Mandy Alzner brought along their little ones, Stella and Anson. Daniel Winnik tagged along too and brought his lovely wife, Taylor. All three families look like they are literally having the best time ever.

You can go golfing with the Caps in team’s latest charity event, ‘Wish Upon A Par’

Tuesday morning, the Capitals announced that then will be hosting a new charity event this month, the Wish Upon a Par golf tournament. Wish Upon a Par will be held on Monday, February 20, at Top Golf in Ashburn, Virginia. Tickets are now on sale and include food, two and a half hours of golfing, a silent auction, and the chance to win various prizes. VIP tickets are also available. All proceeds will go to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation Mid-Atlantic.

Capitals players in attendance will include Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson, Taylor Chorney, Brett Connolly, Philipp Grubauer, Marcus Johansson, Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik, TJ Oshie, Nate Schmidt, Justin Williams, Tom Wilson, and Daniel Winnik. Alumnus Rod Langway will also be in attendance.

This event joins the team’s many charitable events, such as Capitals Casino Night, Courage Caps, Better Halves Gift Baskets, and various seasonal jersey auctions.

Karl Alzner chills out in a cryotherapy chamber

Karl Alzner recently took the chance to chill out – literally.

He stripped down to step into a cryotherapy chamber, where gaseous nitrogen is used to drop the temperature within the chamber to subzero temperatures of -200°F to -300°F for two to three minutes at a time. Proponents of cryotherapy say that the process helps to speed muscle recovery and release endorphins.

Five days ago, Alzner celebrated his milestone 500th consecutive game played – a franchise record.

Saturday Practice Photos: Braden Holtby playfully slashes Nate Schmidt after scoring

The Washington Capitals held an optional practice in front of a full house, Saturday. Half the team, including Head Coach Barry Trotz, was not on the ice. Everyone was energized and in high spirits from the 6-0 shutout against the Chicago Blackhawks the night before.

Instead of a puck, Daniel Winnik started the warm-up with a perforated practice golf ball. Later Braden Holtby and Nate Schmidt shared a silly moment after Schmidt and Dmitry Orlov put a shot past the netminder. Holtbeast playfully slashed Schmidt’s legs, whose dramatics ensued for a fun set of images. Holtby’s face after his payback was priceless.

Post-practice Matt Niskanen even tried to hide from the camera and we shared a laugh. It was a great welcome back to the hockey grind. Enjoy these snaps from the morning practice.

Karl Alzner poses with milestone 500 consecutive games puck (Photo)

Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner became the first player in franchise history to play in 500-consecutive games, Friday night against Chicago. He also became the third defenseman since 1944 to do so.

And on a night where Braden Holtby and Jay Beagle starred in a 6-0 thrashing of the Blackhawks, it was Alzner, despite having only one shot on goal in 19:59 of ice time, who was the team’s first star.

Karl Alzner plays in 500th straight game with Caps, congratulated by Cal Ripken (Video)

By playing a shift in Friday’s matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks, Karl Alzner became the third defenseman since 1944 to play in 500-straight games. Considering how physical hockey is and how demanding an 82-game schedule can be, this is an impressive milestone. And the congratulations have been pouring in.

Baseball Hall of Famer and owner of the longest consecutive games streak, Cal Ripken, Jr., congratulated Karl in a tribute video made by the team.

Karl Alzner’s slapshot goal caused one fan to chuck his popcorn in celebration

Karl Alzner is not known for his offensive acumen, but this is a new year.

After Justin Williams could not find the back of the net on a breakaway, Karl Alzner took a pass from TJ Oshie and ripped a blistering slap past Mike Condon. The goal caused one young Caps fan to chuck his popcorn in celebration.

Carlzner isn’t working as a shutdown pair

Barry Trotz shook up his defensive pairings a few weeks ago and in doing so he reunited John Carlson and Karl Alzner as the Caps shutdown defensive pair. Carlson and Alzner have skated just over 3,000 minutes together in their career, but only 212 of those minutes have been during the Trotz regime.

But 128 of those 212 minutes have come since the recent reunion. The pair has been Trotz’s first choice to shutdown the top offensive players on the Caps’ opponent any given night. Unfortunately for the Caps, the reunion isn’t going very well. The Caps are getting outplayed when they’re on the ice. This pairing either needs to be broken up or have the difficulty of their assignments reduced.
