Barry Trotz takes blame for Alex Ovechkin’s low ice time in Game Three

After the Capitals 4-3 overtime to the loss to the Leafs Tuesday night, Caps Head Coach Barry Trotz was criticized by fans and analysts alike for giving superstar Alex Ovechkin his fifth-lowest ice time of the season, according to Hockey Reference. Ovechkin’s 15:08 was only 2:01 second more than fourth-line winger Tom Wilson.

“Mike Babcock controlled the line changes,” CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Alan May said during Caps Extra. “All game long, he was changing the Caps bench. I see Alexander Ovechkin with just 15 minutes of ice time tonight. Not enough. I don’t care if you are playing for overtime. This is your best player, supposedly you were saving him for the playoffs. Put him on the ice.”

Tuesday afternoon, after the team’s optional skate, Trotz met with the media and took blame for his decision.

Morning skate suggested it, but pregame warmups confirmed it: Karl Alzner is out, and Nate Schmidt is in.

Alzner had not missed a game since 2010.

Karl Alzner kisses daughter Stella through glass during warmups

Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner appears to have a new playoff routine and it’s pretty adorable.

During warmups of each home playoff game so far, Alzner has been spotted giving a good luck wave or kiss to his daugther Stella.

It doesn’t matter who Alex Ovechkin’s center is

Alex Ovechkin is the league’s most prolific scorer, but he did a lot less of it in 2016-17. Ovechkin shed 15 percent of his shot-attempt volume and 44 percent of his goalscoring during 5-on-5 this season. Paired with his diminished individual offense was a stark increase in opponent shooting rates when number eight was on the ice. Concerned, analysts and pundits have looked at Ovi’s declining possession and searched for solutions.

One leading idea: Barry Trotz should swap Ovi’s center, Nick Backstrom, with Evgeny Kuznetsov. With a different center, maybe Ovechkin could get his offense back. That was the thought, and it was one I voiced several times.

I was wrong.

Dmitry Orlov tackles Tom Wilson and other fun photos from Friday’s practice

The Washington Capitals held a full-practice on Friday morning. It was obvious the team was still pumped up from their shoot out win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night. Dmitry Orlov, who had the only regulation goal for the Capitals, was in especially high spirits, laughing and messing around with his teammates throughout the entire practice.

The team welcomed back Paul Carey, who earned a call up after a remarkable four-goal game the prior week with the Hershey Bears. Carey will stay with the team during the upcoming road trip as an additional forward.

Near the end of practice, Orlov took Tom Wilson down during a practice rush. The two slid along the ice as Orlov celebrated his accomplishment. Enjoy the photos!

Nate Schmidt, half of Caps best D pair, is scratched again

According to The Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan, Nate Schmidt will serve as the team’s seventh defenseman for the rest of the season and sit tonight against Nashville. This decision is somewhat of a surprise, as reports had previously suggested that Brooks Orpik might get scratched with Kevin Shattenkirk returning from a two-game suspension.

After sitting out for five games, Schmidt was excellent filling in for Shattenkirk. Besides scoring a nice goal to open the scoring against Minnesota, Schmidt went plus-13 in five-on-five shot attempts during his two games back in the lineup. Schmidt sitting after such an excellent performance is a tough by-product of the Caps’ stacked blueline, especially after the Shattenkirk acquisition.

Player Gift Baskets: Russian vodka signed by Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, and Orlov highlights Caps’ Better Halves auction

The Capitals Better Halves are auctioning off their annual gift baskets. The themed baskets include autographed items and jerseys from all your favorite Capitals players. The basket also includes items that highlight each player’s unique personality.

For the Winniks, their basket highlights the couple’s love of bulldogs and liquor. Taylor Winnik and her creative mind got alcohol from every country represented on the Capitals and then had the corresponding players sign the bottles.

So yes, there is a bottle of Russian Vodka, Stolichnaya, signed by Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Dmitry Orlov.

Capitals hang out with fans at Topgolf for charity event ‘Wish Upon A Par’ (Photos)

On Monday, the Capitals spent their day at Topgolf for Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic’s Wish Upon A Par. The event gave Caps fans a unique opportunity to spend the day eating and golfing with their favorite players while raising funds for a fantastic non-profit organization. Many of the Wish Kids from Hockey Fights Cancer month attended and were reunited with their players.
