F1 driver Kevin Magnusson did a Cup Stand with Lars Eller

The Washington Capitals were recently featured in a video of Formula 1 drivers trying to guess US sports teams prior to the inaugural Miami GP this weekend. In the video, Valterri Bottas and Kevin Magnusson were the only two drivers who could connect Washington with the clue “Capitals.”

Finnish driver Bottas, we discovered, loves hockey and is a 10 percent owner of his local Liiga team, the Lahti Pelicans. However, it took a Twitter reply for us to discover why Magnusson knew.

Magnusson is Danish and was at Lars Eller’s Stanley Cup party in 2018.

A year ago today, Capitals players swam in fountains and drunkenly took over DC

At some point soon, the Capitals anniversary posts will stop, but today is not that day.

On this very nice day of 6/9, we are celebrating the anniversary of when Capitals players visited Nationals Park, made bad decisions in Georgetown, and became legends.

It’s the one-year anniversary of fountain day.

DuClaw is releasing a new beer called Cup Stand. It’s inspired by the Capitals’ Stanley Cup championship.

The Washington Capitals’ euphoric Stanley Cup championship victory in June inspired hundreds of thousands of local fans to gather at the National Mall for the team’s parade. Since then, there have been Stanley Cup bobbleheads, wine, buckets, pig races, and corn mazes made in tribute.

The latest salute comes in beer form.

In collaboration with local beer shop Downtown Crown, DuClaw Brewing Co., located in Baltimore, MD, is releasing a new pilsner entitled Cup Stand. Featuring a silhouetted Alex Ovechkin doing a Cup Stand on top of the Stanley Cup, the logo utilizes navy blue and white stars from the Capitals’ third jerseys.

The beer will be sold exclusively in cans and on draft at Downtown Crown Wine and Beer in Gaithersburg and Georgetown Square Wine and Beer in Bethesda starting Thursday, December 13.

The Capitals invented the Cup stand. The tradition bent the bowl of the Stanley Cup.

Washington Capitals players celebrated their Stanley Cup victory hard in June. There were shirtless fountain celebrations, sloppy parties, drunk tattoos, and Cup stands. Lots and lots of Cup stands. But the Stanley Cup managed to survive without a ding or a scratch.

“The guys were really, really careful that they weren’t going to damage it,” Philip Pritchard, the Keeper of the Cup, said to USA Today’s Michelle R. Martinelli in mid June.

“All Alex’s weight was on [Braden] Holtby and [Brooks] Orpik, they were holding it all. There was no pressure on the Cup or anything,” Pritchard said of the team’s ritual. “And that’s what I think is great about a Stanley Cup champion: they know how hard it is to win, and they’re not going to do anything disrespectful or that can damage the trophy in any way.”

However, in late July, something seemed different about the Cup.

During the Cup’s jaunt through the midwest, new head coach Todd Reirden picked up the championship trophy from its case. Something was noticeably off.

The Stanley Cup’s bowl was bent and misshapen.

Caps locker room assistant Ray Straccia drank an ICEE out of the Stanley Cup

Ray Straccia is having his day with the Stanley Cup. And I’m happy to report the Caps locker room assistant realized his gas station dream.

Straccia stopped by at an Allentown, Pennsylvania Wawa and slurped an ICEE out of the Stanley Cup with a straw.

Chandler Stephenson’s mom also did a Cup stand

It’s happening, people.

Friday night, Chandler Stephenson’s mother Bev became the second Capitals mom (that we know of) to do a Cup stand. Bev follows in the footsteps of Nicklas Backstrom’s mother Catta, who went viral for performing the party trick earlier in August.

Nicklas Backstrom’s mom did a Cup stand

The Capitals’ illustrious tradition of performing Cup stands continued during the Stanley Cup’s visit to Nicklas Backstrom’s hometown of Gävle.

Thus far, this sacred ritual has included a Conn Smythe winner, a late night talk show host, a 7’1” referee, Alan May, and nearly every Capitals player and staff member.

We can now include on this list Nicklas Backstrom’s mother, Catrin Backstrom.

Andre Burakovsky does Cup stand, Tom Wilson calls him ‘fish out of water’

Andre Burakovsky’s day with the Stanley Cup in his hometown of Malmo, Sweden would not have been complete without the Capitals newest tradition: the Cup stand.

Burakovksy completed the feat at Moosehead Bar with an assist from his trainer, Jonas Morin, and his barber, Seb Mollden.

Shane Gersich does Cup stand with an assist from TJ Oshie

After spending the first part of his day in Warroad, TJ Oshie flew to Minneapolis and concluded his Stanley Cup day with a private party.

He invited two Caps rookies for the celebration: Shane Gersich and Travis Boyd.

Gersich became the latest Capital to do a Cup stand.

Capitals scout Steve Bowman does Cup stand, eats catered food from Qdoba during Stanley Cup day

Saturday, Capitals head amateur scout, Steve Bowman, had his day with the Stanley Cup in London, Ontario.

The scout, who is from the hockey-famous Bowman family, is the nephew of Scotty Bowman. After the Caps won their first Stanley Cup championship as a franchise in June, Bowman became the third member of the family to have his name etched on the championship trophy. The Bowmans have won the Stanley Cup 18 different times (Scotty, 14; Stan, 3; and Steve, 1).

Steve celebrated by doing a Cup stand in his backyard.
