After partying nearly non-stop since Thursday night, Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby guested on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In their short segment on the show, the Caps stars discussed the new Sports Illustrated cover, talked about Holtby’s strategy as goalie, and took swigs from the Stanley Cup with Fallon.
Right off the bat, Fallon congratulated Ovechkin on being on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The host then asked Ovechkin if he had dreamed of gracing the front of the magazine with the Cup.
“Yeah, it’s something pretty cool,” the forward said, clearly not having dreamt about Sports Illustrated. “Good looking guy, why not?”
Later, Fallon talked to Holtby about the pressure on him as a goaltender. “You gotta have confidence having [Ovechkin] on your team, but that’s still a lot of pressure on you, as well.”
“Yeah, I don’t know,” Holtby said. “I usually just close my eyes and hope for the best.”
To end the segment, Fallon brought out Triple Crown-winning jockey Mike Smith, just days after his Belmont win with Justify. Ovechkin, Holtby, Fallon, and Smith then went on to drink from the Stanley Cup before Ovechkin and Holtby hoisted Fallon up to recreate the Great Eight’s Stanley Cup keg stand.
After taping this segment on Monday, Ovechkin, Holtby, and the Cup will be back in DC for the Capitals’ championship parade Tuesday.
