Ted Leonsis will still pay Capital One Arena workers despite games canceled due to coronavirus

The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir and NBC4’s Mark Segraves are reporting that Ted Leonsis will pay Capital One Arena workers despite all games and events due to the coronavirus pandemic. Leonsis made the announcement and informed staff this morning, according to El-Bashir.

El-Bashir termed the workers being taken care of by Leonsis as “Capital One Arena staff”, while Segraves called them “part-time employees for all 16 events canceled.”

The Capitals spelled out ‘OVI 700’ with giveaway towels to celebrate Alex Ovechkin’s 700th goal

The Washington Capitals will celebrate Alex Ovechkin’s 700th goal in a special pregame ceremony tonight before the Winnipeg Jets. All fans in attendance will get a special Alex Ovechkin 700 jersey towel.

This morning, ahead of the game, the Capital One Arena staff laid those towels on every seat of the arena, spelling out OVI on one half of the lower bowl and 700 in the other.

It’s picturesque and beautiful; it’s a wonderful tribute.

700 lucky fans can get a free donut celebrating Alex Ovechkin’s 700th goal at tonight’s Capitals game

Fans attending tonight’s Capitals game against the Winnipeg Jets can possibly pick themselves up a sweet pre-game treat.

The Capitals will be honoring captain Alex Ovechkin tonight for scoring his 700th career NHL goal on February 22 against the Devils, and all fans in attendance will be receiving a special 700VI rally towel.

The first 700 fans to visit the Dunkin’ kiosk at Capital One Arena will get a free #700VI-themed donut, as well as a Dunkin’ gift card. The donut is filled with vanilla buttercream and topped with vanilla frosting and #700Vi-themed artwork.

Jakub Vrana and Michal Kempny give Czech fighter Makhmud Muradov signed Caps jersey after UFC knockout victory in DC

UFC Fight Night came to Capital One Arena on Saturday and several Capitals players were in attendance including Tom Wilson, Jakub Vrana, Michal Kempny, Dmitry Orlov, and Ilya Samsonov.

Vrana and Kempny were especially focused on the Makhmud Muradov-Trevor Smith fight early in the night. Muradov, who was born in Tajikistan, is Czech. Muradov had one of the most impressive finishes of the night, knocking out Smith in the third round to improve his record to 24-6

In anonymous poll, NHL players say Capitals have worst visiting locker room: ‘Washington’s showers are so bad. They’re like a prison shower.’

ESPN’s Emily Kaplan polled 50 NHL players about some of the most pressing issues in the game. Kaplan asked about recreational drug use, Gritty’s popularity, and the worst place to play (Winnipeg, it’s always Winnipeg).

The Washington Capitals made the list for something you would never, ever expect.

Capital One Arena confiscates ‘Free Hong Kong’ sign at Washington Wizards game

The Washington Wizards’ exhibition game against the Guangzhou Long Lions on Wednesday night found itself the latest forum for an ongoing struggle between free speech and American business interests in China. During the game, Capital One Arena staff repeatedly confiscated signs from fans expressing support for Hong Kong.

Capital One Arena’s brand new jumbotron to make debut during Caps preseason opener

During the offseason, a second round of renovations was started at Capital One Arena. The main focus of these “Phase II” upgrades were enhancements to the video displays in and around the arena, as well as further concession upgrades and a facelift for the 200 level.

While many of the upgrades, such as the full scope of the LED “sky ring” boards, aren’t quite ready to go just yet, fans attending tonight’s first preseason game against Chicago will get a first look at the brand spanking new jumbotron.

Capital One Arena is banning backpacks at Capitals games this season

A year after Capital One Arena changed their bag policy, a new update has been made prior to the start of the 2019-20 season.

In place for all games involving the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and Georgetown Bulldogs, all backpacks will be prohibited at entry into the venue. Capital One Arena is following Nationals Park, which banned backpacks at the start of the 2019 season, and Audi Field, which has had a no-backpack policy since it opened.

Construction begins on Capital One Arena’s impressive new jumbotron

It’s officially the end of an era.

Construction crews have taken down the old Capital One Arena jumbotron and are replacing it with a new scoreboard as part of the second phase of renovations to the Washington DC venue.

The new jumbotron, according to Monumental Sports and Entertainment, will be one of North America’s largest continuous 360-degree center-hung scoreboards. And the model photos are beyond impressive.
