‘The Demons have been exorcised!’: A year ago today, Evgeny Kuznetsov eliminated the Penguins from the playoffs

Exactly one year ago today, on May 7, 2018, Evgeny Kuznetsov secured his place in the hearts of Capitals fans and DC sports history when he scored the OTGWG to eliminate the Pittsburgh Penguins, sending the Caps to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 20 years.

As RMNB’s own Peter Hassett said in his recap of the game at the time, “Game over. Series over. Curse over.”

The Capitals, of course, went on to win their first ever Stanley Cup in franchise history a month later. But the second round win against the Penguins remains a highlight of the run, and for good reason.

So, let’s relive that moment and the aftermath in its entirety, together.

Alex Ovechkin’s game-used gear from the Capitals’ Stanley Cup run is available in the NHL Shop

Alex Ovechkin led the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup in June. And now, some of Ovi’s game-used equipment from that historic Cup run is being made available in the NHL’s store.

But it’ll cost you a pretty penny.

Earlier this week, Fanatics, a partner of Ovechkin’s and the NHL’s official retailer, put up The Great 8’s CCM gloves, a pair of his iconic yellow-laced skates, his hockey pants, socks, and his Nike warmup shirt that feature his number 8 logo.

Each piece of game-used gear comes with an individually-numbered hologram from Fanatics Authentic and Certificate of Authenticity signed by Ovechkin.

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom: From Young Guns to Stanley Cup champions

This article is in honor of 8/19 Day.

In June, the Washington Capitals and Vegas Golden Knights faced off against each other in a historic Stanley Cup Final. The Capitals emerged triumphant, for the first time in their 44-year history. But while that win was an emotional experience for everyone tangled up in the organization, it was palpable on the faces of two of the franchise’s biggest stars.

For Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, the turbulent road to their Stanley Cup victory stretched out over a decade, and they experienced their share of playoff heartbreaks along the way.

In poignant video, Steve Dangle tries to make Caps fans everywhere sob

Friday evening, Steve Dangle released his final Cup Check video of the season. It was an emotional and very poignant reflection on the Golden Knights’ inaugural season, the Capitals’ desperate run at the Cup, and his acknowledgement of how badly he wants that same run from his Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Capitals took their postgame Stanley Cup celebrations to social media. There was a lot of drinking.

Thursday night, the Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup. Many of the players and their wives took to Instagram to document the monumental moment… and the after party.

It’s amazing.

The captain of each Stanley Cup-winning team always has a big decision to make after they skate the championship trophy around the rink: Who should hold the Cup second?

Game Five was the highest rated Washington Capitals game in any NBC market ever

The Washington Capitals had already set the record for highest rated Capitals’ game during Game Four of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final with a 22.9 local rating. Last night, after clinching the Stanley Cup, they broke the record once more with a 25.2 local rating in the Washington DC area.

Jay Beagle becomes first player in history to win Kelly Cup, Calder Cup, and Stanley Cup

There were a lot of firsts that happened out on the ice on Thursday night. The Capitals won their first Stanley Cup. Lars Eller was the first Danish player, and Nathan Walker the first Australian, to receive the honor. Alex Ovechkin, meanwhile, was the first Russian-born captain to lift the trophy.

Jay Beagle, on the other hand, has the unique distinction of being the first player ever to win a trifecta of playoff trophies: the Kelly Cup (ECHL), Calder Cup (AHL), and Stanley Cup (NHL).
