It’s April, which means the flower buds and playoff beards have just entered their awkward pretween phase. Also, playoff games–and the correlating unhealthy rise in our collective blood pressure–have officially gotten underway.
Thursday night, the Canes came to town and the hosting Capitals showed them a bad time by beating them 4-2. Nicklas Bäckström kicked things off with two hugs, Alex Ovechkin joined the party with a powerplay cuddle puddle, and Lars Eller capped things off with an empty-netter nuzzler.

The playoffs have started and the goodwill between the Capitals and their former teammate Justin Williams seems to have already come to an end.
Five minutes into the second period of Thursday night’s match, Matt Niskanen laid Hurricanes star Sebastian Aho out with a big hit. Williams was furious.

The Washington Capitals opened their 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 4-2 win over a pesky Carolina Hurricanes team. The Caps were able to get their man advantage unit on track and staved off a third period Canes rally to get the victory.
The Canes out-shot the Caps 29 to 18.

Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal was one of many local sports stars who attended the Capitals’ Game One win against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Beal, who has become close friends with Evgeny Kuznetsov, celebrated after the game in the best way.
He did The Bird.
Ah, the loffs. My old friend. We only see each other but once a year, and by the time he leaves me my apartment’s a mess, my body is a dumpster, and my mind is on the very edge of insanity. I love my friend, the loffs, so hard.
Game One between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes was, um, everything. There was violence, then an explosion of goals, then a tense detente, then a defensive collapse, and oh god are we going to do this all the way into June again?
So here’s how it went. The Caps got stymied for ten minutes, but Nicklas Backstrom broke through right after that, besting Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek on the second shot of the night. Backstrom struck again with a power-play layup assisted by Evgeny Kuznetsov, then Alex Ovechkin added a power-play goal of his own before the first intermission.
After a scoreless second period, rookie Andrei Svechnikov changed the game with two goals to snap the shutout and then make it a one-goal game. For a long while it was agonizingly tight, and then Lars Eller secured the empty-netter to put this one in the books.
Caps win 4-2! Caps lead the series 1-0.

Game One of the Washington Capitals-Carolina Hurricanes first-round series was a star-studded affair.
Seemingly all of the biggest sports stars in DC came out to support the Caps as they try to repeat as Stanley Cup champions.
Let’s review.
The greatest goal scorer in the known universe, Alex Ovechkin, has scored his first goal of the playoffs.
It was — and brace yourself for the shock — a power-play goal.
The first ten minutes of Game One were a physical slog without much offense for the Washington Capitals, but then we hit the ten-minute mark, and Nicklas Backstrom kicked off the postseason with back-to-back goals.
