Tom Wilson scored on an insane deflection to open the third period, giving the feisty forward 14 goals on the season. The goal knocked the wind out of the sails of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who hoped to make a late comeback.
Equally as important later in the game, Wilson had an equipment malfunction and put his hands down his pants on national television.
Philipp Grubauer is surging and his hot streak continued Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Grubauer made 37 saves to win his seventh start in his last eight games. The victory clinched the Capitals’ third straight Metropolitan Division championship.
Grubauer’s best save of the night came on future Hall of Famer, Sidney Crosby, and it might have been his best save of the season. After Jakub Jerabek turned the puck over in front of the net, Grubi bailed his defenseman out in a huge way.
The Washington Capitals went into Pittsburgh to play the flightless birds that have so tormented them throughout history and came away Metropolitan Division winners for the third-straight season. The Caps left PPG Paints Arena with a 3-1 win, but something tells me they might be returning to said arena in the not so distant future.
The Penguins out-shot the Capitals 37 to 34, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 40 to 33.

In what might be the most confusing altercation of the Caps season, Evgeni Malkin tried to fight TJ Oshie and got in a yelling match with close friend Evgeny Kuznetsov with a minute remaining in the third period.
Malkin refused to leave the ice as he screamed at Kuznetsov. The Penguins forward was given 14 minutes in penalties, including two minutes for interference, two minutes for roughing, and a ten-minute game misconduct.

On Thursday, the Capitals clinched their spot in the 2018 postseason. Now, with a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Capitals have also clinched their third-straight Metropolitan Division title.

Ohhhhh baby did we want this win and the Washington Capitals not only delivered, but have also clinched the NHL’s Metropolitan Division. The two points were awarded to the Capitals who still have three more regular season games to go, including one tomorrow at 8PM. Let’s crank this out. No days off.
Were you sweatin’ about that TJ Oshie injury? Well he reassured us that his lower-body injury was no biggie and scored the first goal of the game to put the Capitals up 1-0. In sad news, Jay Beagle took an upper-body injury and was promptly directed to the locker room. Beagle did not return for the remainder of the game.
The lead was doubled during the second period when Dmitry Orlov scored his 10th goal of the season, bringing the Capitals up 2-0 at the start of the third period. 13 seconds into the third and Tom Wilson brings the score up 3-0 with a perfect tip in. *kisses fingertips like an Italian chef* Oh, Hornqvist scored at some point. Who cares.

Tom Wilson just scored one of the most insane goals of his career, and when you look at the GIFs, you’re not going to understand how it happened.
Pittsburgh Penguins fans are a, uh, different breed and Sunday night they showed their class during Alex Ovechkin’s milestone 1,000th career game.
One fan even made Alex Ovechkin a sign, which he appears to have made in 2 minutes using a sharpie.
Over the last few weeks, a handful of Capitals players have been felled by minor injuries as the team’s battle to lockup a third-straight Metropolitan Division title has gone into overdrive.
Evgeny Kuznetsov hurt his shoulder several weeks ago while Braden Holtby, Philipp Grubauer, and TJ Oshie all recently suffered lower-body injuries. Sunday against the Penguins, Jay Beagle was the latest Caps player to suffer an injury.
TJ Oshie suffered a lower-body injury and was unable to finish Friday night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
After being declared day-to-day Saturday, Oshie ended up taking the Caps morning skate on Sunday and played later that night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Well, now I’m here to say Oshie looks just fine. How I know? He scored the game’s first goal and looked sensational while doing so.
