Alex Ovechkin had two big milestones Tuesday against the New York Islanders. Ovi scored his 718th goal, moving him to sixth place on the all-time goals list, and tallied his 1,300th point on an assist on a TJ Oshie goal.
After the game, Ovechkin and Backstrom did a Zoom press conference together and the Associated Press’s Stephen Whyno took the opportunity to make them sentimental.
The Washington Capitals are the new boys atop the East Division mountain after taking down the streaking New York Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday night. Streaking no more.
Shots were locked up at 22 apiece, but the Caps were out-attempted at five-on-five 46 to 38.

TJ Oshie scored the game’s first goal, cleaning up a Kuznetsov rebound. Then Alex Ovechkin took an Ovi Shot from the Ovi Spot to pass Phil Esposito with his 718th goal. Nick Backstrom added a power-play goal 28 seconds into the third period, taking a great pass from Jakub Vrana to make it 3-0. Then, Oliver Wahlstrom scored as an iffy penalty from Jakub Vrana and a failed clear by Zdeno Chara cost Samsonov his shutout. But that was it.

Minutes after registering his 1,300th career point, Alex Ovechkin continued his Milestone Party with his 718th career goal.
The tally moved Ovechkin past longtime Bruin great Phil Esposito for sixth all-time on the NHL goals list.
