Hunter Shepard, AHL playoffs MVP, signs two-year contract extension with Washington Capitals

Hunter Shepard will try to run it back with the Hershey Bears.

Shepard re-signed with the Washington Capitals on the first day of free agency, inking a two-year, two-way deal where he will make $400k guaranteed each season.

The contract, per CapFriendly, will pay Shepard $775k at the NHL level and $400k in the AHL. The deal represents a big payday at the AHL level for Shepard, reserved for one of the top players in the league. For example, the Capitals paid Mike Vecchione $250k last season in the AHL.

Dmitry Orlov gets huge two-year deal from Carolina Hurricanes

Dmitry Orlov just got paid.

The former Capital and top defenseman available on the free agent market, signed a big, short-term deal with the Carolina Hurricanes. The 31-year-old inked a two-year contract with the 2023 Metropolitan Division champions worth $7.75 million per season.

The news was reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Conor Sheary signs with Tampa Bay Lightning: report

The Short King has found a new kingdom to rule over.

Former Capitals forward Conor Sheary has signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning to help with their middle six. Contract details are not yet known.

Nashville Predators reportedly had conversations with Capitals about trading for Evgeny Kuznetsov

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan seemed to indicate after the NHL Draft that the team had a couple of irons in the fire. This may be one of them.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported shortly before free agency opened on Saturday morning that the Nashville Predators had conversations with the Capitals about acquiring Russian centerman Evgeny Kuznetsov. Barry Trotz, Nashville’s new general manager, coached Kuznetsov to a 2018 Stanley Cup championship.

Those discussions, though, have “quieted down.”

Hershey Bears re-sign Julian Napravnik and Michael Kim to AHL contracts

The 2023 Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears could see a lot of upheaval heading into the first day of free agency on Saturday as half of their roster needs new deals.

The team announced their first extensions on Friday since raising the Calder Cup last week. The Bears re-signed forward Julian Napravnik and defenseman Michael Kim to one-year AHL contracts — two less heralded players that could play bigger roles next season.

Brian MacLellan says Capitals tried to move up in NHL Draft but ‘everybody had their guy that they wanted to get’

The Washington Capitals’ rumored pursuit of Matvei Michkov was all but confirmed by GM Brian MacLellan after he spoke to reporters at the 2023 NHL Draft.

The Russian phenom was selected one spot in front of the Capitals at pick number seven by the Philadelphia Flyers.

The morning of the draft, Hockey Insiders Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek reported that all the talk heading into the event was that the Capitals were trying to find a way to move up ahead of the Flyers to pick Michkov.

Brian MacLellan says the Capitals haven’t had a single discussion about trading Tom Wilson: ‘We’re constantly telling people we’re not’

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan is exasperated at the media and rightly so.

Tom Wilson, who is an unrestricted free agent next summer, wants to re-sign longterm with the Capitals and the Capitals want Wilson to finish his career in their organization. It seems like a pretty open and shut situation, but rumors that Wilson could be on the move keep on popping up.

Thursday, after the Capitals made six picks total at the 2023 NHL Draft, MacLellan once again reiterated that Tom Wilson is not available. Like at all.

Philadelphia Flyers select Matvei Michkov seventh overall after rumors suggest Capitals were pursuing him

The Washington Capitals selected talented 18-year-old winger Ryan Leonard out of the U-18 USA Hockey National Team Development Program with the eighth overall pick. But all reports ahead of Draft Day suggested the Capitals were pursuing Matvei Michkov — a top three talent who was predicted to slide down the draft board due to KHL contract and geopolitical issues.

Michkov, who wore a red suit and tie to Bridgestone Arena, did indeed slide as hockey insiders predicted, but he did not fall to the Capitals. Instead, the Philadelphia Flyers, who were rumored to be focused on Leonard, snatched up the right wing one pick before the Caps at seven.

Washington Capitals select Ryan Leonard with eighth overall pick in 2023 NHL Draft

The Washington Capitals just missed out on Russian phenom Matvei Michkov, who dropped to seventh with the Philadelphia Flyers.

With their eighth pick, the Capitals selected Ryan Leonard in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Leonard is a right wing for the U-18 USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

The first round of the 2023 NHL Draft will be held Wednesday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN.

Heading into the night, the biggest story continues to be Matvei Michkov and the Washington Capitals’ supposed interest in him.
