The Fayetteville Woodpeckers, the single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, will be handing out some new threads on Saturday, and I’m worried the artist did not consult Urban Dictionary before completing their design.
On August 15, the Woodpeckers will be giving away 1,850 specialty Fayetteville Woodpeckers hockey jerseys — a 500 increase due to high demand after its initial announcement — to fans in attendance for their game against the Fredericksburg Nationals for their “Hockey Night with the Hurricanes.”
The design is inspired by the Carolina Hurricanes’ old road uniforms from 2019 to 2025, complete with diagonal lettering across the front of the jersey that sports the minor-league baseball team’s (not-at-all suggestive) nickname: PECKERS. The giveaway jersey also features the hurricane-warning flag trim along the bottom, and the team’s alternate logo on the arms.
The jerseys have been a huge hit online, going viral as you might expect.
“I’ve never wanted to spend my money on something more,” one commenter wrote on X.
“What a jersey 🤣,” observed another.
“The profits from selling those would be insane,” surmised another.
Fayetteville is about an hour drive from Raleigh, which is just a short trek for diehard Canes fans who are undoubtedly still excited about their team’s Game 6 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Woodpeckers are currently following in the Hurricanes’ footsteps on the field as well, sitting atop the second-half Carolina League North standings, despite struggling in their recent series against the Salem Ridge Yaks.
