Alex Ovechkin’s mother envisions the same ending to her son’s career as he does.

Speaking to RIA Novosti, Ovechkina stated she hopes Ovechkin ends his career where it started and also where she currently serves as president of the women’s basketball team.

“It’s up to him,” Ovechkina said, per a translation by Google Translate. “I’d like to see him in a Dynamo jersey, but that’s a matter of time. He’ll make his own decision.”

Ovechkin is a product of Dynamo Moscow’s youth hockey system, joining the club’s school at age 10, around the year 1995. He made his senior debut on November 14, 2001, at the age of 16, helping Dynamo to a 2–1 road win over Krylya Sovetov in the Russian Superleague. At the time, Ovechkin had the youngest senior-team debut in history.

During his four seasons as a young star with the club, Ovechkin recorded 69 points (36g, 33a) in 152 games, leading his hometown team to the Russian Superleague championship in 2005 before leaving for the Washington Capitals.

Ovechkin later returned to the Blue & White for another season during the NHL lockout in 2012-13, skating on a line with Nicklas Backstrom and Leo Komarov and posting 40 points (19g, 21a) in 31 games. Midseason, when the lockout ended, Ovechkin rejoined the Capitals but technically became a KHL champion in the spring, when Dynamo went on to capture the Gagarin Cup.

As Ovechkin has entered the twilight of his career, he’s told reporters consistently that he’d like to wrap things up playing for his original team — something his longtime centerman, Nicklas Backstrom, is currently doing in Sweden with Brynäs IF.

“My last game in hockey will be for Dynamo Moscow,” Ovechkin recently said on FONBET’s FONtour 2026 World Cup video in July.

While it remains unclear if the Russian sniper will play a final game or a final full season with his KHL club (whom he currently serves as an advisor for), Ovechkin still has unfinished business in North America.

Over the summer, he signed a one-year extension with the Capitals, putting him in line to play a 22nd season in the NHL — with hopes that he could hit 1,000 career goals if he has the health and desire to do so.

Ovechkina, the reason why Ovechkin wears number 8 in the NHL, was supportive of her son’s decision to return to the Caps.

“Of course, I’m glad that Sasha signed a new contract with Washington,” she said. “He will play another season at the highest level. I’m glad he made this decision together with his family. This is life, and the family should be united; the whole family should think about what will happen and how this or that decision will work out.

“He did the right thing by consulting with his family. Sasha has a wonderful wife and wonderful children. They all supported Sasha, and he decided to spend another season in the NHL.”
